The Purdue Boilermakers (4-1) suffered their first loss of the season on Tuesday at Marquette, which also happened to be their first road game of the season. They scored just 0.85 points per possession against the Golden Eagles, connecting on fewer than 44% of their 2-point attempts and 34% of their perimeter attempts. The Boilermakers also struggled with turnovers, giving the ball away 15 times. Fortunately, they will return to the friendly confines of Mackey Arena on Saturday when they welcome the Marshall Thundering Herd (3-1) to West Lafayette.

This will be a massive step-up in class for the Herd, who have played just 1 top 300 team per KenPom’s ratings – a 90-80 loss to #120 Toledo. Purdue has massive advantages all over the court with a highly-experienced backcourt leading the offense and a significant size discrepancy in the frontcourt with savvy post players. With Braden Smith and Trey Kaufman-Renn on the floor together, the Boilermakers will be methodical in their halfcourt offense. Smith is likely to take advantage of the inexperienced Marshall backcourt in ball screens and find ample shots in the midrange, while operating as a facilitator for the ‘Boilers. Kaufman-Renn should thrive in post-up situations and as a roller in pick-and-roll sets with Smith, not to mention his ability to clean up the glass. Look for Purdue to take Marshall out of its rhythm and force the Herd to operate in the half court offensively, where they rank 198th in effective field goal percentage per Hoop-math, in a win and cover in front of its fans.

The Northern Illinois Huskies will travel to Chicago on Saturday to play a non-conference game against the DePaul Blue Demons. The trip to Chicago from Dekalb will be a quick one for game one of the DePaul Classic MTE that includes Valparaiso and Eastern Illinois as well. The Blue Demons have started the season 5-0 and have already gotten more wins than they did all the last season. The spread is a big number in this one, but my best bet of the game is the under.

Northern Illinois has one of the worst offenses in the country and neither team plays at a fast pace. The Huskies are ranked #306 nationally in points per game and only scored 48 in their last outing against Elon on Wednesday. According to KenPom, their offense is ranked #347 in adjusted offensive efficiency and ranked #227 or worse in numerous offensive categories such as effective field-goal percentage, turnover percentage, 2-point percentage and 3-point percentage. DePaul is ranked #232 in adjusted tempo so far this year, so I do not see the Demons speeding this game up and increasing the number of possessions. It’s the under for me.
