Clarke Schmidt (3.55 ERA) gets the nod, and has pitched well against the Orioles. He has given up a total of 7 earned runs his last three starts against them, including two Yankees wins. His last two starts have been quality. Giving up 4 earned runs, and having 13 strikeouts to only 2 walks. His counterpart Grayson Rodriguez (4.45 ERA) is coming off a performance where he got shelled against the Los Angeles Angels. Giving up 11 hits with 7 earned runs.

The Yankees lineup has been absolutely dangerous as of late. Scoring 15 (!) runs a piece the last two games, and by the words of my die-hard Yankee fan roommate, “Aaron Judge is back.” Words no one else in the AL East would like to hear. After a slow start to the season, Judge has batted .350 with 3 home runs in the last 5 games. Pair that with an already hot Juan Soto you get a formula for W’s. With a quality starter on the mound paired with a scorching hot lineup go ahead and take the Yankees at plus money.

Kenta Maeda and Steven Matz will face off today, both pitchers that I faded in their last outings. Matz faced a tough Arizona lineup that was able to score 7 runs off of him in his 4.1 innings of work. They then continued scoring upon his exit, tallying 14 total runs. Matz hasn’t had his strikeout stuff working to begin the season, ranking just 6th percentile in whiff rate and 16th percentile in chase rate. He isn’t generating ground balls either, and with an xBA approaching .300 that is not ideal. Matz draws a Tigers offense that is an underwhelming group overall, but a lineup that should be able to produce at least a couple runs early on in this matchup.

Maeda’s last outing was his best of the season against the Tampa Bay Rays, delivering 5 runs of scoreless ball with 5 strikeouts to 0 walks. He had better command of his off-speed pitches which is crucial for Maeda at this point in his career as his fastball velocity is way down. The Cardinals are a below average offense against right-handed pitching this season which should allow Maeda the chance to deliver his end straight competitive start. I am not the largest fan of either starter, but both bullpens have performed well to begin the season, and with neither lineup in elite form I lean towards the under in this game.

Griffin Canning has faced AL East opponents for his first 5 games of the season, but now faces a National League team in the Phillies. They are strikeout prone and hit a ton of ground balls, both aspects that play well into how Sanchez likes to operate. The Phillies southpaw ranks 98th percentile this season in ground ball rate while also 78th percentile in chase rate. He limits hard contact well and is in good form entering this game, having allowed no more than 3 runs in any start this season. Poor defense behind him cost Sanchez a more efficient outing in his last start, but I expect him to perform well against this Los Angeles lineup. I like the Phillies to win this game.

The league-leading Atlanta Braves head to Seattle for a series that begins on Monday. The Braves are one of a handful of teams looking to be the first to 20 wins on the season. The Mariners, for their part, started the season really cold but have picked it up over the past couple of weeks. Conventional wisdom says that the Braves, who have no holes in their lineup, will outslug the much less potent Mariners, but I like the contrarian hedge with the M’s tonight. The Run Line is very reasonably priced, and Seattle plays a lot of low scoring, 1-run ballgames.

The Braves played extra innings on Sunday and then caught a cross-country flight. That is a classic recipe for a letdown spot. On the mound for the Mariners is Bryce Miller. He has strung together 4 excellent starts in a row, all against good offenses, and there is plenty of reason to believe he can navigate the Atlanta offense without too much damage. Max Fried is going for the Braves, and he has been hittable so far this year as he works back into form. I think there is reason to think that the M’s can keep this game close, even if they don’t win it. Give me the underdog on the Run Line tonight.
