Joel Embiid to score 35+ points (+165)
Embiid just had another massive game, his 2nd in a row scoring 35+ points. He finished with 39 on 12-for-21 shooting against Houston, but his team has now lost their 3rd game on the bounce and the big man won’t be too happy with that. I expect him to come out swinging in the game against LA. He has the physical advantage over Anthony Davis down low which should result in him dominating inside the paint.
Embiid has also mastered the three-point shot and over his last 6 games he’s shooting it at 37.5% efficiency, so don’t be surprised when he steps outside the perimeter and starts knocking down some shots here. The Lakers rank only 26th in opponent points scored inside the paint — they give up 52.8 per game — while over their last 3 games that number has jumped up to 63.3 per game. Look for Embiid to dominate tonight.
LeBron James over 2.5 made threes (+112)
Taking the night off in Toronto should do LeBron well, he’s at a point in his career where he can no longer sustain a high level of play on a nightly basis, so rest and maintenance will be key if he wants to prolong his career beyond 40. His scoring has been going well lately, especially from downtown where he’s knocking down 45.3% of his shots over the past 7 games. That’s an improvement of almost 10 percent compared to what he normally averages in road games this season.
He’s knocked down 3 threes in 4 of his last 6 outings, while against the 76ers he’s averaging 2.3 made from deep in the last 9 games. Philly’s three-point defense has slipped a lot over the past 3 games with opponents shooting 40.8% against them and having Harden back in the line-up also hurts them on that end, so hopefully James can take advantage of that and knock down some threes here.
Over 225 points (-110)
I’m backing the points here simply because of the way the Lakers have played lately. Six of their last 7 games have gone over the 225-point total, and the only time that didn’t happen was against the Cavaliers when Anthony Davis went out early in the game and they had to shift their game plan on the fly. With both LeBron and AD scheduled to come back tonight, I expect the number of points to go back to normal. This team ranks 2nd in pace of play, averaging 103.24 possessions per game, which is really important when you’re betting on the over.
One thing also that should work in our favor here is the return of James Harden to the 76ers’ lineup. As much as the Beard helps Philly on offense with his playmaking, his presence on the other end is a massive liability and teams are taking full advantage of that. We just saw the Houston Rockets put 132 points past this Philly defense, and the Lakers have enough firepower to replicate that tonight.
