LA Lakers ML (-104)

After their win over the Bulls, the Lakers are back to .500 again and have a golden opportunity to finally have a winning record if they can beat the Timberwolves tonight. Minnesota has won both meetings so far this season, but I find it hard to imagine the Lakers would allow themselves to get swept by this team. Minnesota has been on a really solid run, winning 4 of the last 5 games, but the Timberwolves have just received some bad news on the injury front as Naz Reid has suffered a broken wrist which should keep him out of the lineup for an extended period. Reid is averaging 16.4 points per game in his last 9, so their bench production takes a big hit. Covering the spread has been hard at Target Center lately and they’ve done it just once in their last 6 games. With the Lakers going 4-2 ATS in their last 6 on the road, their luck may be about to change in these teams’ head-to-head meetings. I’ll back LA on the money line.

D’Angelo Russell to score 20+ points (+145)

Getting LeBron James back is great, but I’d argue D’Angelo Russell’s return is a much bigger boost for the Lakers right now. The former Timberwolf made an instant impact in his first game for a week with 17 points and 4 dimes against the Chicago Bulls, but more importantly his presence brought stability to the Lakers at the point-guard position. He’ll be out to prove himself tonight against his former team, so scoring 20 points sounds like a realistic goal considering he’s averaging 19.1 per game in his last 10 outings. This will be his first game against Minnesota since they traded him to the Lakers, and as a member of the Nets and Warriors he scored 31, 52 and 30 points against them in 3 of his last 4 outings. Mike Conley is a solid defender, but outside of him Minnesota is shorthanded on defense at the point-guard position. We saw that in their last game when 36-year old Chris Paul scored 19 points. I think Russell can get to 20 fairly easily.

Anthony Edwards to score 30+ points (+230)

Despite the return of Karl-Anthony Towns, the Timberwolves team still belongs to Anthony Edwards. Ant-Man scored 31 points in a losing effort against the Suns on Wednesday, and tonight he matches up with LeBron James, who stopped playing defense a long time ago to preserve energy. The speed and athleticism of Edwards is hard to keep up with even for much younger players than James, so this is a really solid opportunity for our guy to have a big game. In 2 of his last 3 against LA, Edwards has put up 27 and 29 points, so he’s been right around the 30-point mark. The Lakers are struggling to defend the 3-ball, allowing 37% of made shots in their last 3 games, and that’s exactly what he wants to hear as a player who is making 40% of his attempts from deep in his last 10 games. Ant-Man is on a mission to bring the T-Wolves into the playoffs and battling the team that’s just behind them in the standings could bring out the best of him.
