The Golden State Warriors and Phoenix Suns face off tonight in a potential Western Conference Finals preview. Each team enters tonight with a 2-1 record and for the Warriors, it’ll be their 1st game of the season on the road. Through 3 games, there’s no denying the Suns have had the tougher schedule thus far, beating the Mavericks and Clippers, while losing by 2 points to the Trail Blazers on the road. Meanwhile, the Warriors handled the Lakers on opening night, lost a closer one to the promising Nuggets, and bounced back with a win against the Kings. So who has the edge in tonight’s matchup — the defending champs or the Suns at home?
The Suns appear to be building upon the success of last season, particularly on the defense end of the floor. Their defensive rating of 104.0 is a slight improvement from their 106.8 rating last season, which ranked 3rd in the league, right behind the Warriors. The Warriors however have taken a big step back defensively, allowing 120.7 points per game. The Lakers, Nuggets, and Kings have all had their season highs in points scored against this Warriors defense. Obviously, the Warriors haven’t had any issues scoring themselves, but as the saying goes, “defense wins championships”, and the Suns have been the much better team on that side of the ball. Look for the Suns to exploit the Warriors soft defense and come away with the win.

The combination of Mikal Bridges and Deandre Ayton will be the Warriors toughest test through the 1st week of the season, and it should force them to slow things down offensively.
While the Warriors have gone over the total in all 3 of their games, they’re presented with their biggest challenge tonight. The teams they’ve played thus far are not as impressive as the Suns defensively and I see this game as one that’s lower scoring for both sides. Back the under and trust the Suns to slow down a Warriors’ offense that’s been on cruise control in the early goings.
