It’s the 2nd night of a back-to-back for the Brooklyn Nets as they try to end a 2-game losing streak against the Dallas Mavericks tonight at Barclays Center. The Nets are once again the talking point of the NBA media world as they are off to a less-than-impressive 1-3 start through 4 games played. Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving are doing their part, averaging 32.3 and 27.3 points per game respectively, but the team’s effort on defense has been questionable at times. I’m expecting that to pick up over the next few games — if not, then head coach Steve Nash could be in trouble.
Tonight they are going up against the Dallas Mavericks, who are yet to win a road game this season in 2 attempts. The Mavs are coming off a 2-point loss at New Orleans, which wasn’t a good look for them as the Pels were without 2 of their best players in Zion Williamson and Brandon Ingram. Brooklyn and Dallas did split the season series last year and on paper, the two teams are fairly evenly matched so you’d assume tonight’s game could go down to the wire. The Nets do still have Kevin Durant, who has the ability to carry them in the clutch. The Nets need to avoid slipping to 1-4 on the season, so let’s back them to win.

Luka Doncic to record 10+ assists (+235)
Luka has gone over 30 in all 3 games so far, so there really is no value in backing him to score a ton of points here. Instead, I am going for the assists primarily because in the 1 win this season over Memphis he finished with 10 dimes, while in both losses he finished with 7 and 6. The Mavs hold the NBA’s best offensive rating through 3 games at 122.6 and the next-best team behind them is at 118.7, which tells you just how much potential this team has offensively.
It all starts and ends with Luka though, and when he gets his teammates involved the sky is the limit for this team. The last time he faced the Nets he finished with 37 points, but this time around I’m expecting him to get players like Christian Wood, Spencer Dinwiddie and Tim Hardaway Jr. involved as all 3 of them are averaging double-digit points.

Spencer Dinwiddie over 2.5 made threes (+114)
Dinwiddie loves to show off against his former team. He’s faced them 3 times in his career and has scored in double digits in all 3 games, plus the last time he played them in March of this year he finished with 22 points. His 3-point shooting has been really impressive in the 3 games played this season and he is 2nd on the team in efficiency with 55.6% makes from downtown, while making 3.3 per game on 6 attempts.
With the Nets’ defense primarily focusing on stopping Luka, there will be plenty of space to exploit on the perimeter for Dinwiddie. Brooklyn ranks only 26th in the NBA in opponent 3-point percentage, allowing 39.5% of makes from downtown. They also own the 2nd-worst defensive rating at 119.8, so we could see the Mavs flourish from distance in this game. Fingers crossed Dinwiddie can continue his stellar start to the new season.
