The Phoenix Suns will play host to the New Orleans Pelicans in a matchup between two teams that are currently sitting out of the playoffs in the standings. With a record of 27-31, the Suns are three games back of the Sacramento Kings and the 10th seed in the Western Conference. A question for the remainder of the season is if the motivation is there for the Suns. There has been speculation looming around this team that if they will move on from Kevin Durant this upcoming offseason. We already know that Durant’s name was mentioned at the trade deadline, so the idea of him being traded this upcoming offseason certainly seems like a possibility. The Pelicans have struggled all season due to injury but have managed to win three of their last four games. Their last win was on Tuesday when they defeated the San Antonio Spurs 109-103. Trey Murphy III led the team in scoring with 24 points and Zion Williamson added 18 points.
This will be the second time these two teams have faced off. They last competed against one another in December when the Pelicans won on their home court 126-124. Durant missed that game with an injury but should be in action tonight. Injuries for tonight’s game include Dejounte Murray, Kelly Olynyk, Bruce Brown, and Herbert Jones for the Pelicans, and Monte Morris and Cody Martin for the Suns. The Suns are the healthier team tonight and should be the more motivated team. The Suns are not fully out of the playoff picture at this point. If their intentions are to sneak into the postseason, tonight’s game is one they need to have. Despite the Pelicans’ short winning streak, New Orleans has still failed to win on the road in the past month. They have lost their last 8 games away from New Orleans, losing 7 out of those 8 games by a total of 8 points or more.
