Pelicans vs Thunder Pickswise Expert Predictions
Trading away Brandon Ingram sends a clear message that the Pelicans have pretty much given up on this season, which will see them tank the rest of the way to get a higher pick in the upcoming draft. Zion Williamson, CJ McCollum and Trey Murphy III are all healthy and putting up numbers, which means the Pels will cause an upset or 2 occasionally — but anything more than that is not to be expected from this team. The Pelicans have lost 8 games in a row, but in their latest defeat at Sacramento they lost by just 5 points while leading by as many as 20 in that game. Playing the Thunder won’t be a pleasant experience; the Pels are on an 8-game losing streak in head-to-head meetings and have not won a road game in their last 6 attempts overall.
The Thunder are massive favorites here and for good reason. They are top of the West with 42 wins and just 9 losses. SGA is playing at an MVP level, Chet Holmgren is back from injury and they are on a 5-game winning streak on the heels of an impressive victory at Memphis 125-112 this past weekend. The2 wins over the Pels were both by double-digits, while in the first meeting of the season OKC held New Orleans to just 88 points. So, will we see a repeat of that performance here? On paper we should, but the Thunder cannot afford to take this team lightly — no matter how big the spread is coming into the game.
Holmgren coming back will be a massive for the Thunder down the line in the postseason. However, he will likely need some time to get back into rhythm. Because of that and the massive spread, I am staying away from backing the Thunder to cover. Instead, let’s go for the points. The Over is 13-3 in the last 16 OKC games and 4-1 in the last 5 for New Orleans.
