Playoff positioning will be a heavy topic Saturday night when the Memphis Grizzlies travel north to Detroit, Michigan to take on the Pistons. The Grizzlies are currently in freefall as the season winds down to an end. Ja Morant sealed the game late as time expired to propel the Grizzlies to victory. The Pistons are the current fifth seed in the Eastern Conference, just a half game up on the Bucks. Regardless of tonight’s outcome, the Pistons will finish the season with a record good enough to keep them out of the play-in tournament. This season should be considered a big success for a Pistons franchise that has struggled to compete for numerous years.

Tonight’s game will be the second time the Grizzlies and Pistons meet up this season. Memphis defeated Detroit 131-111 on November 27, 2024. A lot has changed since they met last year. They have both trended in opposite directions. Since the All-Star break, the Grizzlies have posted a record of 9-14. The once tough, defensive-focused Grizzlies have failed to stop their opponents consistently during that time. In their last 25 games, the Grizzlies rank 20th in the NBA in defensive rating, a stark contrast to their pre-break ranking of 7th. Detroit faired much more fairly since the calendar year moved to 2025. Since January 1st, the Pistons have a record of 29-16 and have been ranked as the third best team in the league in defensive rating during that time. Cade Cunningham is still listed as questionable for tonight’s game. Whether Cunningham can go or not, the Pistons have shown more consistency and overall effort than the Grizzlies have shown in recent months. I like for the Pistons to find a way to win at home tonight.
