What a wild, unpredictable year it’= has been for the Dallas Mavericks. Just 10 months removed from a surprising run to the NBA Finals, Dallas now finds itself clinging to playoff hopes in the Play-In Tournament. The roster looks completely different, and so does the vibe. The chaos began early in the season when superstar Luka Doncic was shockingly traded to the Lakers, sending shockwaves through the league. The Mavs’ return in that deal, Anthony Davis, went down with an injury in his first game. Then, just as Davis was nearing a return, Kyrie Irving tore his ACL — ending his season and possibly closing the door on the Mavericks’ playoff push. Statistically, this Dallas squad doesn’t do much to impress. The Mavs finished the season 17th in offensive rating and 20th on defense, and over their last 10 games they have been the league’s 26th-ranked offense. It’s been rough. The Mavericks are now hoping Davis, alongside Klay Thompson, Spencer Dinwiddie and a patchwork supporting cast, can catch lightning in a bottle.
On the other side, the 9th-seeded Sacramento Kings have endured a bumpy ride of their own. Following a breakout 2023 season as the #3 seed, expectations were sky high. Instead, they have underachieved — highlighted by inconsistent stretches, a midseason firing of Mike Brown and a blockbuster deal that sent De’Aaron Fox to San Antonio while bringing in Zach LaVine. Despite the turbulence, Domantas Sabonis has been a rock while averaging 19.1 points, 13.9 rebounds and 6.0 assists per game. His matchup against Davis will be must watch, but Sabonis has been battle tested by the West’s pleather of big men. The Kings have also won all 3 matchups with the Mavericks this year and I expect that to continue. Sacramento’s starting 5 is stronger, and with Dallas limping across the finish line, this feels like a close-out opportunity. Skip the spread; I’m banking on the Kings to just win the game and move on to play the loser of Memphis vs Golden State.
