Cavaliers vs Magic Pickswise Expert Predictions
One of the bigger games in the Eastern Conference on Tuesday takes place in Orlando, where the shorthanded Magic are set to take on the top-seeded Cleveland Cavaliers in a rematch of last year’s first round playoff series. The big news around this game is the injury situation for both teams, but the outlook for Orlando appears to be a lot more grim given the general identity of this Magic team. Heading into Tuesday’s game, the Magic are going to be without lead guard Jalen Suggs (quad contusion), who is missing his 13th straight contest and his 23rd of the last 24 Magic games. As for Cleveland, point guard Darius Garland did not play on Sunday against Memphis after leaving last Friday’s game early with a minor hip injury. Garland is listed as questionable for Tuesday’s game, and if he remains sidelined, Isaac Okoro and Ty Jerome would continue to see more minutes in his absence. Even if Garland is unable to go, I would still contend that Suggs is the significantly bigger loss in this game. After all, he clearly plays a massive role in how Orlando’s defense operates, and I’d still expect the Magic to struggle to stop Donovan Mitchell and the Cleveland offense, whether Garland suits up or not.
The Cavaliers have been one of the against-the-spread darlings in the NBA this season, particularly against inferior competition. Cleveland has proven that it can lay big numbers on the road and get the job done, so Tuesday’s game against a very poor Orlando offense (28th in offensive rating per 100 possessions) shouldn’t faze Mitchell and company. The Cavs are one of the few teams that has the size and shot blocking ability inside the paint to really make things a challenge on Franz Wagner, while Cleveland’s wing defenders are versatile and switchable, which should make life harder on an inconsistent Paolo Banchero as well. On the other side of the ball, Cleveland has the potential to generate mismatches with its talent and perimeter shooting, which we can expect from a Kenny Atkinson team. Even with the injury uncertainty in this game, let’s back the Cavs to win and cover this number on the road.
