The Iowa Hawkeyes take on the Michigan State Spartans after putting on a dominant performance in a 40-16 win over Washington last time out. The Hawkeyes’ defense is elite as per usual, and should give an incredibly turnover-prone Michigan State offense fits. The Spartans rank 122nd in interceptions per pass — QB Aidan Chiles has a 5:8 TD:INT ratio — and 125th in fumbles per rush. Michigan State struggles in the big-play department, as it ranks 108th in pass explosiveness and 126th in rush explosiveness. The Spartans’ rushing attack has been weak as it stands but they face the 4th-ranked defense in rushing explosiveness allowed and 18th in EPA/rush. I don’t see a way Michigan State finds any sort of consistent offense in this one.

As for Iowa, offensively the run game has been rather efficient behind RB Kaleb Johnson. The junior ranks 2nd in the country in rushing yards (937) behind only Ashton Jeanty and is a big reason the Hawkeyes hold the 12th-ranked rushing offense. This isn’t the same Iowa offense from years past; the Hawkeyes have put up at least 31 points in 4 of 6 games this season and the Spartans happen to be one of the weaker defensive units they have faced. With all things considered, I’m laying the points on Iowa.
