Connecticut vs Georgetown Pickswise Expert Predictions
One of the more intriguing games in the Big East comes in Washington, D.C. on Saturday between the UConn Huskies and Georgetown Hoyas. The two-time defending National Champions are certainly a formidable brand in the sport, but I’m not all that convinced that the Huskies are a great team at the moment, especially when freshman phenom Liam McNeeley is out of the lineup. UConn’s offense has been inconsistent this season, and that’s even with McNeeley in the lineup. With the do-it-all forward sidelined due to an ankle injury, it’s going to be a struggle for this Huskies team to generate consistent offense, outside of getting some easy buckets from the unique sets and advantages that this staff creates for them. After all, we just saw them struggle mightily in a loss at Villanova. With that in mind, this team just feels a bit over-inflated in the market currently thanks to reputation and a couple of nice wins in December, all of which came with McNeeley leading the way on both ends. UConn’s defense is certainly worse without him on the floor, and it wasn’t like things were great even when the team as fully healthy, as Dan Hurley’s group sits at 122nd in adjusted defensive efficiency per KenPom. The Huskies play at a slow tempo as well (318th nationally in pace), which should help the underdog Hoyas stay close at home.
While UConn is trending in the wrong direction heading into this game, Georgetown is on the upswing. The Hoyas have won 5 of their last 6 games, while covering the spread in each of those contests. This is a good spot for the Hoyas at home coming off an 8-point loss at Marquette, where it could be argued that they outplayed the Golden Eagles for large stretches of that game. If you can go on the road and compete with the best team in the Big East, then you can certainly hang with UConn at home. The Hoyas have a top 30 defense nationally, including a top-5 defense in the paint thanks to standout big man Thomas Sorber. Malik Mack is extremely comfortable in running this offense, so I have confidence that he can perform well against a defense that is underachieving to this point in the season. KenPom and Barttorvik have this game projected much closer to a pick ’em, and I’d make this line under one full possession with UConn’s burgeoning star sitting this one out. Let’s get to the window with the Hoyas.
