The Georgetown Hoyas (12-6) started the season hot, and despite 4 straight losses in Big East play, they are still playing good ball. Their most recent stretch of losses to Marquette, UConn, St. John’s and DePaul were all by 8 points or less, and all of those defeats are excusable – even the most recent one because the Hoyas were without Jayden Epps and Thomas Sorber on Friday against DePaul. Potentially short-handed again, the Hoyas will make the trip to Philadelphia on Monday night to play the Villanova Wildcats (12-7), who were able to squeak by with a 2-point win over Providence on Friday. The Wildcats trailed at the intermission but outscored the Friars in the second half en route to a 75-73 victory despite shooting just 27% from beyond the arc.

Whether Epps or Sorber play or not, I like Villanova in this game. The Wildcats have the most efficient offense in the Big East, and they usually don’t have many self-inflicted mistakes – turning the ball over on just 12% of possessions against conference opponents. They are also nearly automatic from the free-throw line, which is a massive advantage against a Georgetown team that has made fewer than 65% of its free throws against conference opponents. In addition to poor free-throw shooting, the Hoyas really struggle to take care of the ball. They commit a turnover on more than 22% of possessions against Big East opponents, and giving Villanova’s offense extra possessions is not a winning strategy given how good it has been. Against a defense that yields a three-point attempt on 41% of possessions against conference opponents, Villanova should get plenty of good looks from the perimeter tonight. After a poor shooting performance against Providence, I like the Wildcats to get back on track offensively and win this game by margin no matter who is on the floor for Georgetown.

Monday is a busy day, and you would be forgiven if you overlooked this Rutgers Scarlet Knights vs Penn State Nittany Lions prediction. It is Martin Luther King Jr Day, there’s a presidential inauguration, and a college football national championship going on today, and yet the Big Ten is squeezing in some hoops in the middle of it. These 2 teams are already playing for the second time, with Rutgers taking the first meeting in December, 80-76. This time, the game moves to State College and the Nittany Lions look to get revenge. I think the Knights are getting plenty of points, and I don’t see this game being vastly different from the first meeting. My Rutgers vs Penn State pick is Rutgers +7.

Both teams like to play fast, get up and down the floor, and force the issue. Penn State plays at one of the fastest paces in the country, and they routinely both score and allow 80+ points. It is the “allowing” part that is killing them during their 4-game losing skid. The Scarlet Knights, on the other hand, recently hung 85 on the board in a win at Nebraska, and this game should have a similar feel. Rutgers is riding a 2-game winning streak, and they seem to be putting some things together. Penn State looks good when considering their season-long metrics, but when we look at their recent results, they have lost their identity. While every night is tough in the Big Ten, and no one should be alarmed that they dropped games to Michigan State, Oregon, and Illinois, they have struggled mightily in the process, especially on defense. I think Rutgers can once again post 80 points, and it is hard to imagine that Penn State can cover this spread if their defense allows that kind of outing from the Scarlet Knights. Give me the road team and the points in this spot.
