One of the best spots of the entire week across the college basketball landscape comes to us on Thursday in State College, Pennsylvania, where Penn State is set to host an Ohio State team that is flying high following a pair of massive wins over Purdue and Iowa. The Buckeyes are now in a prime let-down spot against a Penn State team that is better than its record suggests, and it doesn’t help matters that Ohio State has a game at Illinois on deck on Sunday as well. Throw in the fact that the program is returning to its roots on Thursday by having this game at nearby Rec Hall — a 7,000-seat older gymnasium that produces a much better fan atmosphere than the cavernous Bryce Jordan Center — and it’s hard for me to ignore the signs pointing to Penn State in this one.

Ohio State has struggled mightily on the road this season, and the Buckeyes will be taking on a Penn State team that is due for some positive regression after dropping 4 of its last 5 games by a combined 11 points. On the flip side, the Nittany Lions are 10-2 at home, including victories over Northwestern, Rutgers and Purdue, teams that profile pretty similarly to Ohio State in terms of its defensive metrics. The Buckeyes have also experienced major issues with turning the ball over this season, ranking at the bottom of the Big Ten in offensive turnover rate. That spells trouble against the Nittany Lions, who make their money on the defensive end by speeding up opposing offenses, forcing turnovers and converting those turnovers into points on the other end. In fact, Ohio State has recorded at least 14 turnovers in 4 of its past 7 games, which doesn’t bode well against Penn State’s on-ball pressure.

As for the Penn State offense, I’m expecting a rock-solid game for Ace Baldwin, who should be able to get 2 feet in the paint and make the right decision against a Buckeyes defense that is 294th in free-throw rate allowed. Nick Kern Jr. is in the midst of a very promising stretch as well, and I’d expect him to be a major contributor in this game. I’m expecting a sellout crowd to be on hand for this matchup, and the White Out atmosphere should be a factor in Penn State covering this short number at home.
