It has been a tough start to 2025 for Arsenal and the Gunners may see their Premier League title challenge fade away following another blow at home to North London rivals Tottenham. Mikel Arteta’s team started this set of midweek games 6 points behind Liverpool, having played a game more, and a setback against Spurs could be potentially fatal to their season. That’s because last week Arsenal suffered a 2-0 defeat at home to Newcastle in the first leg of their EFL Cup semifinal and then they were dumped out of the FA Cup at the 3rd-round stage by visiting Manchester United. Despite playing against United’s 10 men for 30 minutes of normal time and another 30 minutes of extra time, the Gunners were unable to seize the initiative at the Emirates and they were again wasteful in that penalty shootout defeat. Arteta’s men are still creating chances but there is a distinct lack of confidence in the final third without the influential Bukayo Saka, who has 5 league goals and 10 assists to his name this season. Arsenal have failed to win in 5 of their last 10 matches in all competitions and they could find things tough once again against their fierce rivals Tottenham.

Tottenham’s 1-0 win at home Premier League leaders Liverpool in the first leg of their EFL Cup semifinal last Wednesday will likely have fueled the fire and motivation that Spurs can get something from this game. Head coach Ange Postecoglou needs to get Spurs climbing up the Premier League table, with them languishing in 12th with only 1 win in 8, but this could provide the platform. Arsenal have clearly taken a backward step from last season and both Newcastle and Manchester United were able to exploit them on the counter-attack, something which should also be a strength of pacy Tottenham. Defensive injuries persist for the visitors but they have an array of attacking talent and they have scored on their last 7 trips to the Emirates Stadium. Goals look likely and, while Tottenham’s defensive disruption are far from ideal, they look good odds to get something from this game.
