The NHL’s Wednesday night slate features a matchup between the Nashville Predators and the Washington Capitals. The Predators are still searching for some elusive team chemistry, as they have underperformed so far this season. The Capitals look to remain hot at home, hoping to advance to 7-1-0 on home ice to start the year. Nashville had high hopes for this season, looking to build on a 2023-24 season in which it made the playoffs with massive free-agent signings. The Preds have been terrible on offense away from home this year, averaging 1.64 goals per game — dead last in the NHL. They give up the 4th-most high-danger scoring chances per away game and second-most high-danger goals per away game. Even with a star goaltender in Juuse Saros, he has not been able to cover up the mistakes in front of him so far. I expect that trend to continue on Wednesday night.

The Capitals have been fantastic to open the season, especially when it is at Capital One Arena. They have gotten off to a 6-1 start at home, scoring the second-most goals per game at home. They also rank 2nd in expected goals on the power play at home, an area that should be pivotal in this game — as the Predators own a 92.1% penalty kill. The Capitals are right around league average in terms of goals and expected goals allowed per home game, which should be good enough to hold off a Nashville attack that has struggled. On paper these teams are pretty evenly matched. However, momentum is a very real thing that is affecting them in exact opposite ways. I think there is good value on the home side, as the Capitals ride their hot streak at home to another victory.
