Rams vs Patriots Pickswise Expert Predictions

Los Angeles Rams
Point Spread Pick
NE Patriots +4.5(-110)

The Los Angeles Rams just saw a 3-game winning streak come to an end last week and they will be looking to get back on track against the New England Patriots. Los Angeles definitely looks a bit better than it did in its horrific start to the season, but not enough for me to feel good about laying this many points with the visitors. Two of the wins in their 3-game surge came against struggling Seahawks and Raiders teams, and both those wins were by 6 points or fewer.

It’s hardly been a dominant stretch. Starting tackle Rob Havenstein is out for this one and backup Joe Noteboom is doubtful, so it looks like the Rams are going to be down to their third-string tackle on Sunday. And since they played on Monday Night Football this past week, they are on a short week traveling across the country for an early-window game. Speaking of that Monday Night Football affair, they just came crashing down to earth by losing an ugly one to the Dolphins. Despite having both Cooper Kupp and Puka Nacua healthy, the Rams couldn’t muster more than 15 points.

On the other side, the Patriots are coming off a big win and Drake Maye is starting to show signs of major growth. New England has won 2 of 3 and its 1 loss in that span was in overtime. Last week the Pats dominated Chicago, sacking Caleb Williams 9 times in a 19-3 blowout win. Maye has looked about as good as you could hope for for a rookie playing with little talent at the skill positions or along the offensive line. The last time the Patriots played at home, they pulled off a big upset over the Jets. I think the Rams will come out sluggish given the rest disparities. I’m backing the home underdog in this one.

I also think there is some value on the over. Drake Maye has started to show major flashes, and he’s also proven to be a legit threat with his legs. Maye already has 233 rushing yards, and has played less than 5 full games. Now he gets to face a Rams defense that is giving up 8.4 yards per pass attempt this season, tied for the worst mark in the league. New England’s defense has played alright the last few weeks, but that’s likely because it has went up against the struggling Bears, Titans and Jets offenses.

Right before that stretch, the Pats gave up 32 to the Jaguars and 41 to the Texans. Los Angeles’ offense looks completely different when it has both Cooper Kupp and Puka Nacua on the field, and I think they will both show up here in a must-win game. New England has quietly scored at least 16 points in 5 straight games, and while that’s not saying all that much, it also doesn’t look like the bottom-feeding offense that we thought it was early in the season.

Los Angeles Rams vs New England Patriots prediction: Over 43.5 (-110) available at time of publishing. Playable at that number.
