Apparently, GamblingX tells us that many sharp bettors love Seattle +3 this Sunday night. And yet, the spread has moved from a 2.5 to a 3-point chalk over the last 2 days, in favor of the away team. Clearly, the market and its clients believe this will be about a 2-3 point contest, aka a very close game, no matter which side of the 3 you choose to be on. We tend to agree, but we think one side may not be getting as much love as it should. The Seahawks are on a nice run, winners of their last 4 contests. A closer look at their winning streak tells us that, while winning in the NFL is always impressive, maybe we should hit “pause” before we declare that the Seahawks are a very good program. Coming off the bye at just 4-5, Seattle beat the Niners in a wild 4th-quarter comeback after being down all game, they took advantage of Arizona in a terrible spot in Week 12, they should have lost against the Jets but more Jets mistakes paved multiple paths to victory, and last week the Cardinals gifted them with 2 early turnovers and a 14-point lead. Seattle deserves some credit – they’ve played well defensively, Geno Smith has been solid (3 touchdowns, 73% completion rate) and they’re healthy.

At the same time, not one aspect of their performances has been clearly outstanding, and their rushing attack is struggling (they took advantage of garbage time in Week 14 but only ran for 48 yards per game in 3 contests following the bye). Meanwhile, the Green Bay Packers just went toe-to-toe with the consensus best team in the NFL, the Detroit Lions, and nearly won. Green Bay has been through plenty of adversity this season already, like winning 2 games without their star quarterback, yet if the postseason started today they would be the 6th seed. Their defense has been up and down in 2024. As the season wanes on they’ve only gotten better, boasting top-10 marks in opponent points per game, yards per play and yards per rush. And we know how good their offense is, which now has a workhorse, top-tier back in Josh Jacobs, to complement Jordan Love. Seattle is a very tough place to play, but this is a commanding spread at this juncture of the season, especially for a road favorite, and we think it’s telling a story. Like they showed last Thursday, Green Bay can beat anyone in the NFL.

By making this total 46.5, oddsmakers are telling us they’re a bit undecided on how this contest will unfold. On the one hand, Seattle’s defense looks as good as it has all year, clearly growing before our eyes. Over their last 4 wins, they’ve permitted just 15.5 points per game, a mark that would make them the most effective defense in the NFL if those were the only games played. They’re finally getting to the quarterback (11 sacks since the bye week), and they’re looking like a true Mike Macdonald group, disciplined in their assignments and aggressive to the ball.

Seattle’s defense, which allows a 25th-ranked 4.7 yards per game, will be tested against an elite Packers rushing attack. Led by Josh Jacobs (1,053 yards, 11 touchdowns), the Packers are committed to their ground game (3rd in rush-play percentage, 50.83%) and one of the most effective units in the NFL (144.7 rush yards per game, 5th). Still, even if Green Bay sees a lot of success on the ground, their passing attack hasn’t been as potent, and we doubt they’ll be able to run roughshod over Seattle on the road.

Both passing attacks are capable of putting up a ton of yards, but neither has eclipsed 274 yards the last 4 weeks. This is also a pivotal NFC playoff matchup for both programs, so nerves should be high and defenders will likely be hitting hard. This number, which moved down from 47, is not going back up. The Under looks the right side to be on.
