Illinois was going through a rebuild in 2021 and they look to kick things off in 2022 with a win over Wyoming. A 4-0 start is possible for the Illini, but don’t be surprised if Wyoming at least pushes them close. Illinois coach Bret Bielema will likely continue to focus on the run game given his offense averaged 170 rushing yards per game last season.
However, one factor that is alarming for Illini bettors is that they scored over 25 points just three times in 2021. Laying nearly two touchdowns would leave very little room for error for their defense. Wyoming had one of the best defenses in the Mountain West conference last year and has the ability to keep Illinois somewhat in check. And if the Illini focus on their run game, that would mean the clock keeps ticking. It’s tough to see a Cowboys win, but they can at least keep things respectable.

Wyoming vs Illinois over/under prediction: Under 44 (-110)
A lot of what was said above also applies to why taking under 44 points to be scored looks to be a smart move. Both defenses were strong last season, with the Illini allowing an average of 21 points per game while the Cowboys allowed 24. Illinois’ focus on the run should keep the clock ticking and therefore fewer plays and possessions as a result, but it’s also worth bearing in mind that both teams will be playing with a rookie quarterback. As a result, both Illinois and Wyoming will likely look to ease their QBs into the game. Take the under.
