Welcome to another terrific Tuesday of sports. The off-field activity remains as relentless as the actual games, with a major NFL trade and a flurry of NHL moves on deadline day yesterday, but there’s also live action today, with the NBA and NHL in the spotlight. Let’s get straight into it!
About Last Night
76ers beat Heat as LeBron leads Lakers to win in Cleveland
College basketball is taking a well-earned rest but there were a lot of interesting games in the NBA on Monday, not least LeBron James returning to his former team Cleveland and posting a 38-point triple double to lead the Lakers to a 131-120 win. There were several clashes between playoff contenders, with the 76ers beating the Heat, the Nets overcoming the Jazz, the Bulls beating the Raptors and the Mavericks edging out the Timberwolves.
Bruins and Avs win in overtime
There were only 4 games in the NHL yesterday but it was a case of quality over quantity. The Bruins needed overtime to beat the pesky Canadiens, and the Avalanche needed added time to beat the Oilers 3-2. The Wild beat the Golden Knights and the Predators beat the Ducks by 3-goal margins in the other games.
Today’s Slate
Two games on TNT
There are only 4 NBA games today but we have a TNT doubleheader as the Hawks visit the Knicks at 7:30 pm ET, before the Clippers go to the Nuggets at 10:00pm ET. Read today’s NBA game previews.
NHL gets busy again
There are 11 NHL games on the schedule today with the Hurricanes trying to arrest a 4-game losing streak when they host the Lightning. Check out today’s NHL game previews.
NFL QB Carousel
Ryan heads to Colts
NFL QBs are still being shuffled around, and Falcons veteran Matt Ryan was traded to the Colts yesterday, with the Falcons signing free agent Marcus Mariota on a 2-year deal to replace him, while the Saints are bringing back Jameis Winston, leaving Jimmy Garoppolo and Baker Mayfield as the highest-profile QBs still seeking new homes.
Best Bet of the Day
Pittsburgh Penguins -1.5 vs Columbus Blue Jackets
7:00 pm ET, ESPN+
The Penguins are getting primed for the playoffs, and just acquired Rickard Rakell from the Ducks, while Columbus traded away Max Domi. Columbus has just one skater averaging over a point a game in Patrik Laine, who has been carrying the team since his return from injury. Pittsburgh has 3 such skaters, led by Sidney Crosby, who had 2 goals on the road last game out. The Penguins are returning to Pittsburgh after a 2-game winning streak on the road, and won both the teams’ previous meetings this season on the road. If the Jackets couldn’t get it done in Columbus, their chances are even worse on the road. Take Pittsburgh to win comfortably. Read our full game preview for Blue Jackets vs Penguins.
