Good morning Pickswise Nation and welcome to Wise n’ Shine, your one-stop shop for everything you need to know to bet better today! Just think, one week from now the first NFL result of the season will be in the books, and last night the big names of college football returned. Football season is here! There’s plenty of sports action today, too, so let’s get right to it!

About Last Night

Buckeyes begin with a win
Ohio State opened the NCAAF season with a 45-31 win over Minnesota. The Buckeyes are +600 to win the National Championship with FanDuel Sportsbook. Our NCAAF handicappers went 4-1 (with one push) against the spread and our Thursday College Football parlay was a winner too! We also saw a little bit of MLB history as the Marlins and Mets each hit their first pitch of the game for a home run. That hasn’t happened since at least 1985, before which pitching records were less precise.

Today’s Slate

MLB back to full strength
After a quiet Thursday, the MLB is back in top gear with a full 15-game slate. The day’s finale between the Astros and Padres is being shown on ESPN+ and our expert has a three-star pick for that game. Be sure to read our picks for each of today’s matchups.

College Football continues
The drama of NCAAF action has made a welcome return to our screens and tonight’s slate is headed by No. 10 North Carolina taking on Virginia Tech (ESPN, 6pm ET). Make sure you check out our NCAAF picks and predictions for all of tonight’s big games, and also get an early look at the weekend’s action.

US Open heating up
The U.S. Open continues at Flushing Meadows and our tennis expert Ricky Dimon is back with his best bets of the day’s action. He went 4-0 with his picks yesterday, including a +172 underdog winner! Check out today’s tennis picks here.

Best Bet of the Day

LA Angels -1.5 vs Texas Rangers
9:38pm ET

Shohei Ohtani is set to make his 20th start of the season for the Angels and he will be happy to be back at home, where he is 5-0 with a 1.92 ERA on the year. Ohtani will face a Rangers team that has been awful on the road in 2021. Texas is 16-49 away from Globe Life Field, and those 16 road wins are the fewest in the American League by a wide margin. Check out our full preview of Texas Rangers vs Los Angeles Angels.

Stat of the Day

Jake Arrieta will take the mound for his second start in a Padres uniform with an alarming 7.13 ERA and 6.10 xERA in 89.2 innings between the Cubs and Padres this season. He has allowed 32 runs in 16.2 innings in his last 6 starts. Check out our full preview of Houston Astros vs San Diego Padres.

Must-read

Fantasy drafts are in full swing and NFL Week 1 is firmly in our sights now. Andrew Ortenberg has some smart advice on how to play Week 1, while Ricky Dimon has identified three early NFL best bets for those who can’t wait for next week! Boost of the day

Derrick Henry or Nick Chubb to lead the NFL in rushing yards for the 2021-2022 season

FanDuel Sportsbook has a great NFL Futures offer for bettors who think either Tennessee’s Derrick Henry — the clear winner in 2020 — or Cleveland’s Nick Chubb will record the most rushing yards this season. The odds for this have been boosted from +230 to +300.
