About Last Night

Yankees top Mets in Subway Series opener
The Yankees took the first leg of a two-game set with the Mets on Monday, winning 4-2 at home. Aaron Judge hit a home run off Max Scherzer and Domingo German allowed just one earned run in 6.1 innings of work. Meanwhile, the only run in the entire Cardinals-Cubs game came on Albert Pujols’ 693rd homer.

Jets get comeback win on Monday Night Football
A preseason installment of Monday Night Football went the Jets’ way, as they dug out of a 16-3 hole to beat the visiting Falcons 24-16. The Jets are now 2-0 in the preseason heading into Sunday’s finale against the Giants. Check out all of our preseason coverage and also our best futures bets on our NFL page.

Today’s Slate

Cardinals and Cubs playing a doubleheader
A hefty 16-game MLB slate can be attributed to a doubleheader in the National League Central. The Cardinals and Cubs are playing two, with game one set for 2:20 pm ET before the nightcap begins at 8:05 pm ET. Meanwhile, the Mets and Yankees are wrapping up their quick two-game series at 7:05 pm ET on TBS. Be sure to read all of our MLB predictions.

Best Bet of the Day

MLB: San Diego Padres ML over Cleveland Guardians
9:40 pm ET

The Padres were hyped up in a big way after acquiring Juan Soto at the trade deadline. Although they have not been dominant since that point in time, that means they are still priced reasonably by the oddsmakers. Their talent combined with reasonable odds creates value in the market. At just -150 on the money line for Tuesday’s game against the Guardians, the Padres are a great bet. The pitching matchup is Mike Clevinger of San Diego versus Aaron Civale of Cleveland. Civale was on the injured list for nearly a month and has only faced the Tigers since his return. They are the league’s lowest-scoring team. The Padres most definitely aren’t. They have won four of his last five starts and he should get more than enough run support against Cleveland. Be sure to read our full Guardians vs Padres predictions.

Stat of the Day

Against lefties this season, the Pirates are 17-28 and rank 25th in OPS and 29th in OBP. They are also second in strikeout rate at 26.2 percent. That isn’t good news heading into a matchup with Braves ace Max Fried.

Quote of the Day

“I’m in a really good spot. It’ll be a little different type of a challenge this year, obviously, being two behind Scottie. He’s played a lot of great golf this year, so I expect the same. But it’s a golf course I really like, and I’m looking forward to the challenge. I’ll be just trying to shoot under par each day and not losing sight of that. I’ll definitely draw on those memories from last year and try and stay as focused and in the moment as possible.”

— Defending FedEx Cup champion Patrick Cantlay, who will start the TOUR Championship two strokes behind FedEx Cup leader Scottie Scheffler.
