Wimbledon is upon us. Two of the four Grand Slams on the annual tennis calendar have come and gone in 2023 and now it’s time for the back half of the sports major tournaments to begin. It should be a fun upcoming fortnight in London, where things could be rather wide open on the women’s side. Reigning French Open champion and world #1 Iga Swiatek is the favorite, but she could be challenged by the likes of defending champion Elena Rybakina and world #2 Aryna Sabalenka.
Here are the odds and my picks for the women’s tournament at Wimbledon.

3-star value play: Aryna Sabalenka (+600)
Even without taking any odds into account, Sabalenka is my pick to win the tournament. As such, I will happily back her as the third favorite at +600. The Belarusian arrives at Wimbledon for the first time since 2021 (she and other players from her nation along with Russia were banned in 2022) as a Grand Slam champion, having triumphed earlier this season at the Australian Open. Now Sabalenka is playing on grass, which suits her game even better than hard courts. The 25-year-old is arguably the biggest serve and the biggest all-around hitter on the WTA Tour, so facing her on the lawn of the All-England Club would be scary. Sabalenka advanced to the semis in 2021 and now she is ready to go all the way.
2-star value play: Petra Kvitova (+1300)
The bad news for both Sabalenka and Kvitova is that the bottom half of the draw is far more stacked than the top; the good news is that both women are capable of getting the job done even against the stiffest competition. In Kvitova’s case, she is already a two-time Wimbledon champion (2011 and 2014). The Czech may be somewhat past her prime at 33 years old, but that doesn’t mean she can’t continue to win. In fact, she lifted one of the most significant trophies of her career earlier this season at the Miami Open. If Kvitova can do that on hard courts, just think what’s in store for her on grass. Unsurprisingly, she warmed up for Wimbledon by winning the grass-court event in Berlin to set herself up well to make another run in London.
1-star value play: Veronika Kudermetova (+3500)
With the top half of the bracket sorely lacking in quality outside of Swiatek, it’s worth looking at a longshot in that area. There is no doubt the one to back is Kudermetova, whose grass-court exploits this summer already include a runner-up performance in ‘s-Hertogenbosch and an upset of Sabalenka in Berlin. The 26-year-old Russian could not have asked for a better draw at the All-England Club, as she would not meet Swiatek until the semis and would not see Sabalenka, Rybakina, or Kvitova until the final. I love her position in addition to the long odds.
