With the Los Angeles Rams losing in the Super Bowl it’s time for them to turn their attention to the offseason and trying to get back to the Super Bowl next year. There is no question this team is going to have a lot of talent heading into next season but how long exactly will it take for them to get back for a chance to win a Lombardi Trophy? Will it be next year or has their Super Bowl window already closed and it will be a few years before they get the chance to win it all once again? Let’s take a look on the possibility of the Rams back in the Super Bowl.
Skill players like Jared Goff, Todd Gurley, Brandon Cooks, and Robert Woods should all be back next year barring any trades but there are some big question marks on the offensive line. There has been speculation that Andrew Whitworth could retire and center John Sullivan is a free agent. Rodger Saffold has also made it clear he wants to be back with the Rams, but doesn’t seem to want to take too big of a discount to make it happen so he could be another guy on the move.
The good news on the offensive side that McVay has shown he can work with just about anyone on the offensive side and with the way the offense played this year it could turn into a destination team. Maybe some free agents will take a pay cut to come over to the Rams and try to win a title.
On the defensive side of the ball is where the Rams have a tone of question marks. Aar0n Donald is locked up long term but that is about where it ends. Ndamukong Suh signed a one year $14 million dollar contract this offseason and he is probably going to be looking for a big payday this offseason.
Safety LaMarcus Joyner and edge rusher Dante Fowler Jr. who played big roles down the stretch of the season are also free agents this offseason and could be on the move this offseason.
The Rams are projected to have right around $40 million in cap space this offseason which is just about the league average but with so many guys they want to resign, that could be eaten up pretty quickly.
So How Long before they are back?
It’s really hard to predict just how long before they are back without knowing what they will do this offseason and how the defense looks going into training camp.
I have faith in Sean McVay and I think he does a really good job of getting the best out of his players so I think even if the defense does have a lot of changes this season, that the Super Bowl window isn’t closed.
The NFC is tough and I am not guaranteeing they are going to be back in the Super Bowl this upcoming season but I think they will have at least one Super Bowl appearance in the next three years. The Rams will host the Super Bowl in 2022 and maybe that is the year they will return to the promised land.
