Carabao Cup soccer pick today: Newcastle win in shutout vs Southampton (-115), 3:00 pm ET

The Magpies have been transformed from relegation candidates to Champions League material in just 12 months and they should be able to build on their 1-0 lead from the first leg of their semifinal against Southampton. They failed to seal victory in recent games against Leeds and Crystal Palace, but a 2-1 FA Cup loss to Sheffield Wednesday was the only time they have allowed a goal since the EPL’s World Cup break. They have not been beaten in 13 home games this season, therefore backing Newcastle to win in a shutout will be the play this afternoon.

College Basketball pick today: Wake Forest vs Duke Blue Devils – Over 146.5 points (-110), 7:00 pm ET

The first contest between Wake Forest and Duke resulted in 151 total points scored on a closing line of 141.5 despite both teams shooting below their averages from the perimeter. Oddsmakers have adjusted the line this time around, but with a total of just 146.5 at the time of publishing, I see value on the over tonight considering the expected improvement in Duke’s offensive efficiency on its home floor. For what it is worth, the over is 7-1 in Wake’s road games and 10-0 in their last 10. For that reason, backing the over will be the play tonight.

NHL pick today: Washington Capitals 3-Way ML over Columbus Blue Jackets (-125), 7:07 pm ET

The Washington Capital travel to Columbus to take on the Blue Jackets for the third time this season. Washington has won their previous two meetings and is hoping to add another one to their total. Columbus is one of the worst defensive teams in the league and it’s going to be a challenge for them to slow down Alex Ovechkin and company.

The Columbus Blue Jackets are 3-6-1 in their last 10 games, but it could have been a lot worse. Washington is 4-6-0 in their last 10 and are hoping to head into the All-Star break on a winning note. They’ve outscored Columbus 7-2 in their previous two meetings, so the expectation is they’ll be able to continue that trend tonight. For that reason, backing the Capitals will be the play.

NBA pick today: Los Angeles Lakers ML over New York Knicks (+115), 7:30 pm ET

The Lakers’ 5-game road trip is off to a poor start and they will be trying to avoid a third straight defeat. After a controversial loss to the Celtics, they were beaten 121-104 in Brooklyn last night as both LeBron James and Anthony Davis sat out the game.

LA is 11-11 when LeBron and AD share the floor, which is not great but it is better than their 23-28 record as things stand. The Lakers must get back on the winning track as soon as possible as they are slipping in the West standings and find themselves only 13th at the moment. AD and LeBron both rested against Brooklyn, so they can give themselves the best chance of winning today and I fully expect them to deliver. I’ll take LA on the money line.
