The upcoming Atlanta Open marks the first hard-court tournament of the summer, making it the unofficial start of the buildup toward the U.S. Open. Yes, the season’s fourth and final Grand Slam is barely more than a month away. Although the top dogs won’t come out until bigger events take place in Washington, D.C., Montreal and Cincinnati (Wimbledon champion Novak Djokovic may not be able to come out at all since he is unvaccinated and currently can’t enter North America), Atlanta boasts a strong field. It includes Nick Kyrgios and 6-time champion John Isner.
Let’s take look at the odds to win the Atlanta title and discuss the best bets to be made. It should be noted that the WTA Tour does not play this event, so there are no betting opportunities on the women’s side.

Atlanta Open 3-star value play: John Isner (+600)
Death, taxes and John Isner winning the Atlanta title… those might as well be the three certainties of life. In 11 previous installments of this event, Isner has lifted the trophy 6 times and has finished runner-up on 3 occasions. The defending champion is back for more at what is generally considered his home tournament, even though the University of Georgia isn’t in Atlanta and Isner is actually from Greensboro, N.C. He is treated like a local hero – and for good reason. The UGA legend and leader of American tennis for the past decade is still going strong at 37. His #25 ranking is good for the second seed in Atlanta, which gives him a first-round bye. You need to have a darn good reason to bet against Isner at this particular event, and right now there isn’t one.
Atlanta Open 2-star value play: Alex de Minaur (+700)
There is also a lot to like about Alex de Minaur this week. He has a bye to the second round as Atlanta’s #3 seed and he would not have to meet Isner until the final. Moreover, the 23-year-old has made one previous trip to the Georgia capital (2019) and secured the title with relative ease. De Minaur did not have his serve broken throughout the entire week and did not even face a single break point. The current world No. 30 is coming off a grass-court swing during which he reached the semifinals in Eastbourne and round four at Wimbledon. All signs point to momentum continuing for de Minaur.
Atlanta Open 1-star value play: Tommy Paul (+1800)
Tommy Paul excelled on grass, as well, with quarterfinal performances at Queen’s Club and in Eastbourne before making it to the Wimbledon fourth round. The 36th-ranked American is even better on hard courts than he is on grass and now he is playing at home in the United States for the next 6 weeks, so it should only be full steam ahead. Paul owns a favorable draw in Atlanta, where he would not run into de Minaur until the semis or Isner until the final.
