NHL fans witnessed the 2024 edition of the Winter Classic yesterday as the standalone hockey game of the day. That means almost every team in the league is back in action today and we’re in store for quite the slate. I’ll be looking to build upon my solid 10-2 record so far this campaign with what are, in my opinion, the best NHL player prop bets for today.
We’ll be sticking with 2 teams’ offensive leaders, and you can read the full writeups below. Plus, don’t forget to uncover our NHL picks for all of today’s matchups while you’re at it.
Jason Roberton over 0.5 assists (-105)
First up on my list is the Dallas Stars’ points leader, Jason Robertson. He’s recorded 36 so far this season which is good for 30th in the league, and he’s been especially on fire as of late. With that being said, it’s another statistic I’ll be targeting with him today, and that is assists. Leading up to this contest against a poor Canadiens team, Robertson has notched at least 1 assist in 4 of his last 5 games, including 2+ assists in 3 of those.
Speaking of the lowly Canadiens, they’ve been one of the worst defensive units in all of the NHL up to this point. While their 3.4 goals allowed per outing is 22nd in the league, they allow the 28th-most shots at 32.9. This should give Roberton plenty of opportunities to set up his teammates to score against Montreal, which has allowed at least 4 goals in 4 of their last 5 showings. Oh yeah, the Stars also score 3.6 goals per game, the 2nd-most in the NHL. All signs point to Robertson having a big night in this one.
Alex DeBrincat over 0.5 points (-180)
Next, I’ve got another points leader on the Red Wings — Alex DeBrincat. While Detroit certainly struggled last month (5-10), it’s hard to put much of that blame on DeBrincat. He averaged over a point per outing and even ended 2023 with a nice little hot streak. In his last 7 games, he’s posted at least 1 point in 6 of them and 2+ in 4 of them. Now, he’ll be facing the absolute worst team in the NHL from a defensive standpoint in the Sharks.
San Jose has been at the bottom of the NHL standings all season, and a lot of that is in part due to their lackluster defense. Ranking dead last in the league in both goals allowed (4.1) and shots allowed (35.7) per contest, this is not only a perfect get-right opportunity for the Red Wings, but it also opens up the door for DeBrincat to continue his hot stretch. It also helps that Detroit has scored 3+ goals in 4 of their last 5, and the Sharks have allowed 3+ in 7 straight.
