NFL Week 14 Miami Dolphins vs Los Angeles Chargers prediction

Primetime games are always exciting, but this matchup has history to it. This is a battle between Tua Tagovailoa and Justin Herbert, who were selected with the 5th and 6th picks in the 2020 NFL draft. The two quarterbacks were stellar in college, and they’ve been excellent in their young careers in the NFL. Tagovailoa and the Dolphins beat Herbert and the Chargers in round one back in 2020, so Herbert will have extra motivation on Sunday night.

Miami Dolphins vs Los Angeles Chargers expert picks

We’ve got 2 smart NFL picks for this week’s game between the Dolphins and Chargers.

Dolphins vs Chargers point spread pick: Chargers +3.5 (-105)

This week’s edition of Sunday Night Football has the Los Angeles Chargers hosting the Miami Dolphins. There are plenty of interesting storylines surrounding this one, including Tua Tagovailoa and Justin Herbert going head-to-head for the second time since they were taken with back-to-back picks in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft. The Dolphins have been a great story this year, while the Chargers have once again been a disappointment, but the value here still lies with the home underdog. Miami’s recent five-game win streak sounds great until you look at who it came against. The Steelers, Lions, Bears, Browns and Texans. Yeah, not exactly a murderer’s row.

When they finally stepped up in competition this past week, they lost by 16 to the 49ers despite the fact that Jimmy Garoppolo got hurt early on and they were facing seventh-round rookie Brock Purdy for most of the game. Tagovailoa regressed heavily in that game, tossing a couple of ugly interceptions and missing some easy throws. The offensive line is banged up, and the Dolphins have played much worse on the road overall this season. Miami is also dealing with a bunch of injuries in their secondary, so Herbert should have some success here. Gerald Everett is coming off a big game, and the Dolphins have given up a ton of receptions to tight ends this year. The Chargers seem to always play good teams really close even when they don’t win outright, so getting a field goal with them is always attractive. In both of their games against the Chiefs this year, they lost by exactly three points.

Dolphins vs Chargers over/under totals pick: Over 53.5 (-115)

Buckle up, because we could have a shootout here. With Tyreek Hill and Mike McDaniel brought in this offseason, the Dolphins’ offense has transformed into one of the league’s most explosive units. Their ceiling is extremely high, and Miami has scored at least 30 points in four of their past five games. Los Angeles’ offense has been a disappointment overall this season, but at least Keenan Allen is finally back from his injury, and Herbert can light you up at any given moment.

He should be able to take advantage of a really beat-up Dolphins secondary here. The Dolphins just gave up 33 points to the Brock Purdy-led 49ers, I think Herbert can do some damage. Brandon Staley’s defense has arguably gotten worse in his second year as Chargers head coach, and until Joey Bosa comes back, they’ve got very little talent up front. Both offenses should be able to move the ball all night long, and at SoFi Stadium, we don’t have to worry about any weather or wind. Each side will be airing it out.
