Although this battle between the Seattle Seahawks and Kansas City Chiefs is not expected to be the most competitive matchup on the NFL’s Week 16 schedule (at least not according to the odds), it could be one of the more entertaining affairs. Geno Smith and the Seahawks head to Arrowhead Stadium for a date with Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs for what has the makings of a real shootout. There is plenty on the line, too, as Seattle is fighting to stay alive in the NFC wild-card hunt while Kansas City is duking it out with Buffalo for the #1 seed in the AFC playoffs.

Point spread pick: Seahawks +10 over Chiefs (-110)
At 11-3 the Chiefs are tied for the best record in the AFC and for the 2nd-best record in all of football. However, think again if you think they are some kind of unstoppable juggernaut. Just look at what they have done the past 3 weeks. This current stretch began with a loss to the Bengals, they just barely staved off an upset bid by the Broncos and then they required overtime to beat the lowly Texans. The Seahawks may not be better than the Bengals, but they are certainly more formidable than the Broncos and Texans. It is true that Seattle has begun to unravel just a bit following a hot start to the season, but that’s why the underdogs are getting double-digits worth of points. The thinking here is that 10 is too many. Although head coach Pete Carroll’s crew has lost 4 of its last 5 games, all of those losses have come by 1 score. In fact, 6 of their 7 setbacks on the season as a whole have been by only a single possession. The Chiefs aren’t blowing out anyone these days and there is no reason to think the Seahawks are the team they will suddenly manhandle. Our suggestion is to grab the points.

Seahawks vs Chiefs over/under totals pick: Over 49 (-110)
It’s going to be cold in Kansas City (and everywhere else!) on Saturday, but only a blizzard – which won’t be the case – would probably stop these 2 offenses. Patrick Mahomes and company are used to playing in these kinds of conditions and they have reached the 30-point mark in back-to-back weeks. Seattle isn’t going to prevent this contest from being a blowout by playing a ton of defense; it’s going to do so by scoring a lot of points, itself. Last week Kansas City gave up 24 points to a woeful Houston offense and right before that it surrendered 28 to Denver’s anemic outfit. When you consider that the Chiefs have faced QBs Davis Mills and Brett Rypien the past 2 weeks, Geno Smith looks like an MVP candidate by comparison. This is a huge step up in competition level for KC’s defense – a test that it is unlikely to pass. At least 51 points have been scored in 4 of the Chiefs’ past 5 games; look for this game to make it 5 of 6.
