Detroit Red Wings ML over New Jersey Devils (-130)
Despite having been eliminated from postseason contention, the Red Wings have been playing some very good hockey. They enter this game having won 5 of their last 8 games, including consecutive wins this week against the Lightning and Stars. Detroit’s 2 wins prior were over Florida and Carolina. There is a lot of “would’ve”, “should’ve”, “could’ve” with this Red Wings team this year. Regardless, they are a good hockey team that is ending the season in strong form. It only helps that they are catching New Jersey on the second night of a back-to-back.
The Devils snapped a 3-game losing streak on Tuesday. It was a much=needed win as their prior losses were by a combined score of 12-4 at the hands of non-playoff teams in the Bruins, Penguins and Islanders. It wasn’t pretty on Tuesday either, as it took overtime to beat the Bruins. The Devils have sustained enough points to clinch a playoff spot despite key injuries. But they do not look like a reliable play right now, hence the odds for Detroit as the slight favorite even on the road.

Over 5.5 (-115)
Recent performances are the primary reason for the appeal of the game total over 5.5 goals. The Red Wings have found a scoring touch against good teams lately. In their last 2 games, they have scored 4 goals and 6 goals against the Lightning and Stars. They also allowed 3 and 4 goals for game totals of 7 and 10. Prior to those wins, Detroit either scored or allowed 4+ goals in 8 of their 10 games. That leaves little work for the opponent to do to bring the game over the total, be it scoring or allowing a goal or 2 themselves.
The Devils have been fairly volatile on both sides of the puck lately. On Tuesday, they beat the Bruins 5-4 in overtime. Obviously, the 4 goals in regulation and 5 total goals are a great sign. But the 4 goals allowed made it 16 goals conceded in their last 4 games. Similar to Detroit, if New Jersey holds anywhere near their recent averages on both sides of the puck, the over should have a good look. Recent trends of both teams and the pure matchup give the over 5.5 appeal.
Dylan Larkin over 2.5 shots on goal (-110)
As mentioned, the Red Wings have not mailed it in at the end of this season despite having been eliminated from playoff contention. A big reason for the continued effort is the play of captain Dylan Larkin. Larkin has turned into a heck of a well-rounded hockey player and an excellent leader. Of course, effort alone doesn’t lead to goals. Fortunately for Larkin, he is no stranger to scoring goals in the NHL.
A goal for Larkin would give him his 4th consecutive 30-goal season and the 5th of his career. He will be pushing for that 30th goal, and his teammates will likely look for him more than usual to help him eclipse the milestone. Larkin has 4 points in his last 4 games, he centers Detroit’s top line and top power play, has a good matchup against a team struggling with consistency, and has scored against the Devils this season. With all this in mind, Larkin should be getting plenty of shots off as he looks to secure that 30th goal.
