The College Football Playoff saw a pair of fantastic games take place on New Year’s Eve. Now it’s time to turn our attention to the National Championship game. This game is a true David vs Goliath matchup with an upstart TCU team taking on the defending national champion Georgia Bulldogs. TCU +13.5 (-110) vs Georgia
This TCU team has defied conventional logic and thinking all season long, and I wouldn’t expect that to change here. As we saw on Saturday, Georgia’s defense is excellent, but it can be taken advantage of by quarterbacks who can get the ball out quickly and use their legs to keep plays alive. CJ Stroud did a great job of keeping the Bulldogs’ defensive unit honest with being able to create with his legs off script. That was a huge reason why Ohio State was able to stay in the game, and I anticipate the same being true with Max Duggan and TCU.
This Horned Frogs team also should be able to move the ball on the ground, much like it did against Michigan’s stout front 7 — and that includes Duggan’s mobility when the play breaks down. On the other side, defensive coordinator Joe Gillespie’s 3-3-5 look stifled Michigan’s elite offensive line, which should give the Horned Frogs a decent blueprint for how to slow down the Georgia run game. TCU might not be in the game in the 4th quarter, but it’s hard to count out Duggan and company and their ability to outperform expectations all season long. The Frogs are the only way I can look in this matchup.
