New York Rangers -1.5 (+140) over New York Islanders

This will be the second Battle of New York of the young season. It should also be a great opportunity for the Rangers to bounce back. They were just at home against the Detroit Red Wings and blew a 2-0 lead to ultimately fall in overtime. Contests between these 2 teams from the Big Apple are usually close, but the script is flipped from their first meeting of the season. The Islanders were able to win that matchup by taking advantage of the fact that the Rangers were on the second night of a back-to-back.

These are 2 teams that rely on their elite goaltenders, so Rangers Igor Shesterkin not being available for that game was a massive blow. However, the Islanders are the ones on the second night of a back-to-back this time around. They’ll also be on the road tonight. Although it’s only down the street, playing in Madison Square Garden is a completely different atmosphere. Regardless, the Islanders rely on goaltender Ilya Sorokin to lead them to low-scoring wins. Now the Rangers will be able to answer that great goaltending with last year’s Vezina Trophy winner in Shesterkin. With him in net, they can even up this season series at 1-1 tonight.

Buffalo Sabres -1.5 (+120) over Arizona Coyotes

Picking on the Coyotes has been low-hanging fruit since last season, so let’s focus on the Sabres first. Buffalo is quietly having one of the stronger starts to the year. Despite not making much noise in the offseason, they look much more put together. They’re proving that building from within can be a winning strategy. The Sabres are coming off of 2 tough losses, but those were both on the road and against 2 of the best teams in the Eastern Conference – the Carolina Hurricanes and Tampa Bay Lightning.

Prior to that was a home game against the Pittsburgh Penguins, which they won by a final score of 6-3. That was their 3rd straight home win, and they’ve taken down some of the best in the west as well. They won 3 straight games up in Canada including back-to-back wins over the Edmonton Oilers and Calgary Flames. Now they get to face one of the worst teams in the Western Conference and NHL overall with the Coyotes. As if they weren’t struggling enough, they are currently in the early beginning of a 14-game road trip. They’re allowing the 3rd-most goals per game, and the Sabres have scored 18 goals in their last 3 home games. With that in mind, they can win this one by multiple goals.

Vancouver Canucks vs Ottawa Senators – Over 6.5 (-125)

Let’s wrap things up by swapping to a total. These two teams have been rather inconsistent so far this season, so we prefer to focus on goals. In fact, that’s been the primary reason for their inconsistency. Canucks goaltender Thatcher Demko had a strong season last year, but has not looked nearly as strong. Vancouver is now allowing the 4th-most goals per game in the NHL. They’ve allowed at least 4 goals in each of their last 3 games, which included a matchup against a weak Anaheim Ducks team. Those were all home games as well, and now they leave Vancouver for the first time in 2 weeks.

The Senators are coming off of a loss as well, but they can take advantage of the Canucks poor goaltending. Ottawa added Claude Giroux and Alex DeBrincat over the offseason, but did nothing to address this goaltending. Therefore, it’s no surprise that they’ve allowed the 10th-most goals per game so far this year. They’re also on a 5-game losing streak, allowing at least 4 goals in 4 of those games. Although they’re losing, they can still find the back of the net. Giroux alone has 3 goals in their last 2 games, and 3 of their last 3 games have gone over the total. Both meetings between these teams went over the total last season, and their goaltending has only gotten worse.
