As we approach the NHL’s trade deadline, there is a lot up in the air. Several teams are looking for that final piece to make them a contender, while pending unrestricted free agents audition for contending teams. The standings are jam-packed with more contending teams than playoff spots which makes for a heck of a home stretch. Florida Panthers vs Tampa Bay Lightning over 7 (+105)
The total has gone over in 12 of Florida’s last 16 games and in 7 of their last 8 on the road. The over has also hit in 4 of Tampa’s last 5 games. Over these teams’ respective last 10 games, the over is 12-7-1, which includes 6-2 in Lightning home games and Panthers road games. Those records contribute to these team’s combined over-under record of 64-46-10 including 36-21-5 in Lightning home games and Panthers road games. Both of these teams rank in the top 8 in the NHL in goals scored per game, which has been a key driver behind so many high totals. Tuesday looks like it will bring more of the same.
Although both teams produce at a decent clip, they have been volatile on defense. Weak goal prevention has been Florida’s Achilles heel all season. That combination of good goalscoring but weak goal prevention has been a great recipe for overs. Volatility has been a feature for the Lightning too, but it has largely been a positive as they have either scored or allowed 5+ goals in 4 of their last 5 games. Over the course of the season, they have scored or allowed 4+ goals in 48 of 59 games. That usually leaves just a little bit left to take games over the total. Recent trends, team strengths and volatility all look good for another over.

Buffalo Sabres -1.5 (+110)
The Sabres have had a good stretch of hockey just when they really needed it as they had been losing ground in the standings. They have now won 5 of their last 6 games by a combined score of 30-21 for an average score of 5-3.5. Their wins over that span were against the Ducks, Sharks, Lightning, Panthers and Capitals. That isn’t a bad stretch of opponents, and they took care of business against the weaker teams. Buffalo is playing strong hockey and is right in the thick of a playoff race. The Sabres will have their foot fully on the gas and beat the Blue Jackets 9-4 in their lone head-to-head matchup this season. Tonight could bring a similar result.
The Blue Jackets both score the 3rd-fewest and allow the 3rd-most goals per game in the NHL. They have the 3rd-worst power play in the league and have the fewest points and worst point percentage. They are a favorable matchup for just about every team in the league and the Sabres are no exception. Buffalo scores the 2nd-most goals per game in hockey, and has the 5th-best power play. The Sabres score at a clip that the Blue Jackets just can’t keep up with, as we saw in their dominant win over Columbus earlier this season. Even though it is not likely that Buffalo will scores 9 again, the Sabres have too many advantages to not take care of business in this one.

Seattle Kraken -1.5 (+160)
Things have not been great for the Kraken lately, but they are even uglier for the Blues. St. Louis has lost 5 straight games by a combined score of 21-8. The Blues have accepted their fate as team that will not contend for the playoffs, and have become sellers for the first time in a long time. This month, the Blues have traded valuable players in Vladimir Tarasenko, captain Ryan O’Reilly and Ivan Barbashev. Key Blues players have also been publicly called out by head coach Craig Berube in a way that did not sit well with those players. This is a time for contending teams such as the Kraken to take full advantage of a shallow and now tumultuous Blues team. This is a get-right spot for Seattle, and they should come out buzzing to take the points.
The Kraken have dropped 3 straight games which has them clinging to the final wild-card spot in the Western Conference. If there is a glass half-full view, 2 of those games were against the Bruins and Maple Leafs. But if the Kraken are going to make a playoff run, they have to beat teams like the Blues and compete against the top teams. Seattle scores the 7th-most goals per game in the NHL and has a favorable matchup against the Blues’ 28th-ranked goal prevention. It is tough to feel comfortable taking the Blues in any situation. The Kraken are the better team and have an added incentive to win. They should get the job done.
