Tuesday night brings a little bit of everything with a very solid 8-game slate. There are games that look like they should be close, games that look like they should be blow outs, and stars suited up in every matchup. Urgency has ticked up for several teams as they halfway point of the season has come and gone. A couple teams appear to be playoff locks, but otherwise there is a lot that still needs to shake out in both conference standings. With plenty at stake and plenty to watch for on Tuesday, we’re in store for a great night of hockey.

Philadelphia Flyers -1.5 (+140) over Anaheim Ducks
The Flyers and Ducks played each other earlier in January in a matchup that saw Philadelphia win 4-1. For the Flyers, it was their 3rd consecutive win and part of a current 7-2-0 run. They are licking their wounds leaving Boston having been shut out 6-0 on Monday. But Philadelphia will be back home for this one hosting Anaheim on the second of Ducks’ road back to backs. The Flyers have the back to back game advantage here having returned home before the Ducks-Penguins game even started on Monday, and also in terms of home road splits advantages over Anaheim. The Flyers have been in great form and have already beat the Ducks by multiple goals. There is a good chance of repeat results on Tuesday.
The Ducks are one of the worst teams in hockey. This has been a tough rebuilding season for them and recent results have not strayed from their overall struggles this season. Since Thanksgiving, Anaheim has gone 6-14-4 including 3-6-2 in their last 11. They rank last in the NHL in both goals scored and allowed per game, power play, and 3rd to last in penalty kill. They have a -1.90 goal differential per game. The Ducks have lost 4 straight by a combined score of 24-8. The Ducks just don’t have it this year and they catch a Flyers team that is in great form that also has a 30-13 record against the spread this season. This one looks great for Philadelphia.

Buffalo Sabres -1.5 (+150) over Chicago Blackhawks
The Blackhawks sit in the cellar of the NHL standings, as well as in or near the cellar in several statistical categories. They make for a favorable matchup against just about every team in hockey and the Sabres are certainly no exception. Chicago has actually played decent hockey over the past week, but for all intents and purposes, wins over heavy favorites are the outlier. Among NHL ranks, the Blackhawks are 31st in goals scored per game, 28th in goals allowed per game, 21st in power play, 25th in penalty kill, 30th in goal differential, 31st in shots on goal per game, and 27th in shots allowed per game among more unflattering metrics.
The Sabres are 6-1 in their last 7 games on the road. They have played their best hockey on the road this season to the tune of a 12-7 road record which is also their record against the spread on the road. Unsurprisingly, those are far better splits than that of the Blackhawks at home. Buffalo scores the 2nd most goals per game in the NHL and have the 5th best power play. As long as they play to their season averages, the Sabres will score at a clip the Blackhawks just cannot keep up with. The Sabres are firmly in a playoff race, and will have their foot on the gas in a game which they already have significant advantages. This +150 number is great value for the Sabres to run up the score.

Seattle Kraken vs Edmonton Oilers over 6.5 (-120)
In 2 head to head matchups between the Kraken and Oilers this season, there have been 16 goals scored for an average game total of 8.00. Both teams ran up the score in a win showing that they can both put up goals in bunches against the other. This one has goals written all over it as well regardless of the winning team. The Kraken score the 3rd most goals per game in the NHL, and the Oilers are right behind them with the 4th most goals scored per game. On the other side of the puck, the Kraken rank 17th in goal prevention and the Oilers rank 20th in goal prevention. Those strengths of goal scoring combined with the weakness of goal prevention is a great recipe for a high total as evident by their head to head matchups thus far.
Recent results for both teams have not deviated from those goal production strengths. Seattle has scored 45 goals in their last 10 games for an average of 4.5 goals scored per game. Edmonton has scored 38 over their last 10 for an average of 3.8 goals scored per game. If both offenses produce even close to their recent averages, this over looks like a great buy. These teams are both playing well right now and are relying on goal production for success rather than goal prevention. They will each lean on what works to win this game. What has worked has been strong goal scoring. The pure makeup of these teams looks great for another high total.
