It is do-or-die time for the Maple Leafs on Wednesday night. After the Bruins and Avalanche were surprisingly eliminated in the first round, the Stanley Cup race was blown wide open for the remaining teams. Toronto appeared to be positioned as well as anyone to make a deep run. Yet here they are down 3 games to none. If they get swept, their media appearances and offseason may be the most painful yet. They should come out with some jam looking to get back in this series.

Maple Leafs -1.5 (+175)

Something has to give for the Maple Leafs, right? They surely can’t win their first series in nearly 20 years only to get swept in the second round. Toronto has been playing uninspired hockey, which is not to say any player is out there dogging it, but to the naked eye it looks like they have another level they have yet to hit.

That is not exactly a glowing endorsement for Toronto to cover a -1.5 spread, I know. It has more to do with pride and the law of averages. None of Auston Matthews, John Tavares, Mitch Marner or William Nylander has even scored in this series. They are surely too good to go that quiet that fast. Those players have combined for 38 points in 36 games this postseason. These are league superstars. Toronto, led by these guys, should leave it all out there to get back home for Game 5.

Over 5.5 (-210)

The Maple Leafs were a top-10 team in the league during the regular season in goals scored per game, power-play conversion and goals scored at 5-on-5. They had 4 players who averaged at least a point per game. The top-end talent is there on Toronto to do its part in bringing this game over the lower alternate total of 5.5 goals.

The Panthers have either scored or allowed 4+ goals in 7 of their 10 games played in these playoffs. That does not leave much left for one of the teams to take the game over a 5.5 total. Florida has dialed it in lately, but both teams have shown plenty of volatility in these playoffs which typically favors a high total. Toronto is in desperation mode and Florida is in advance mode. There may be a huge push for offense in this one.

William Nylander anytime goal scorer (+145)

William Nylander is among the Maple Leafs’ star players who have been absent in this series. If it is any consolation, he has arguably looked the best of those players. Nylander had 7 shots on goal in Game 1, 6 shots on goal in Game 2, and an assist and +1 rating in Game 3. He is at least playing with a little bit of spark, which is more than could be said for some of his teammates.

The Maple Leafs and Panthers played head-to-head in 4 games during the regular season. Nylander had 3 goals and 2 assists for 5 points in those games. The Panthers have been a good matchup overall for Nylander considering he had over a point per game in the regular season and has at least drummed up a little bit of offense in the playoffs. Nylander’s 42 goals and 95 points in 91 games between the regular season and playoffs indicate this +145 for him to get on the scoresheet is good value.
