Sunday’s NHL slate is a modest 7 games, but it is loaded in terms of star power and meaningful matchups between contenders. The Eastern Conference has 7 teams at minimum who legitimately have a chance of taking the final 2 wildcard spots. Although there is plenty of hockey left to be played this season, several teams are losing runway quickly and need to collect every point possible. This Sunday schedule will bring plenty of playoff-style games.

Washington Capitals (+105) vs Buffalo Sabres
The Capitals got a badly-needed win on Saturday afternoon. They snapped an ugly 6-game losing streak with a very solid 6-3 win over a great Rangers team. Washington got significant contributions from TJ Oshie and Tom Wilson, both of whom have missed time this season due to injury. Alex Ovechkin chipped in with a couple of points after being away from the team for part of this month. With Saturday’s win, the Caps kept pace in the Eastern Conference playoff picture. If their key players are getting healthy and returning to form, the Capitals will be a tough team to play against. With a great win and a weight off their shoulders, Washington can come out playing a little more loose on Sunday.
The Sabres are enjoying a nice little run as they were on the verge of falling out of contention in this stacked Eastern Conference. Their volatility makes them far from a safe play, though. Washington brings strong value at plus-money considering its veteran presence and pedigree. The Capitals are 11-5 in their last 16 road games to the Sabres’ 2-7 record over their last 9 games at home. Washington has also had Buffalo’s number specifically to the tune of a 9-3 record in their last 12 head-to-head meetings, as well as 6 straight wins in Buffalo. This should be a great game in which Washington carries better value.

Tampa Bay Lightning -1.5 (+195) vs Pittsburgh Penguins
The Lightning and Penguins have gone in different directions lately. Pittsburgh has been in disarray for the last couple of weeks but snapped a 4-game losing streak again St. Louis on Saturday. With that win, the Penguins are 2-5 in their last 7 with a -14 goal differential over that span. Pittsburgh’s win was a positive for them, but they didn’t exactly beat a contending team. If the Penguins could barely solve the Blues, they will have a much tougher matchup against Andrei Vasilevskiy and the Lightning. The Penguins have lost 4 of their last 5 games at home, and are 0-5 against the spread in those games. Right now it looks like the Penguins have to play a perfect game to win against anyone. This game should be an uphill battle for them.
The Lightning continue to get the job done and are 5-1-3 in their last 9 games. Even in their last 4 winless games, they lost by 1 goal and still collected a point in 3 of those games. Over the past few seasons, the Lightning been the epitome of ‘old reliable’ and betting against them is usually a bad idea, especially at this time of year. It’s about that time of year for the Lightning to be the Lightning to which we’ve grown accustomed over recent years. A +195 number to cover -1.5 against a struggling Penguins team is great value.

Toronto Maple Leafs vs Seattle Kraken over 6.5 (+100)
This matchup has too much offense for this +100 for an over 6.5 to not look attractive. Seattle scores the 5th-most goals per game in the NHL and the Toronto scores the 7th-most. While Toronto has flexed strong goal prevention, Seattle has not. The Kraken rank 16th in the NHL in goals allowed per game and have allowed 10 goals in their last 2 games. That mix of strong offense but not great defense and goaltending makes for a high total against Toronto. The Leafs are stacked with offensive talent and have shown as much lately with 3 separate 5+ goal performances in their last 5 games. The Kraken have produced themselves lately with 4+ goal performances in 4 of their last 6 games. Pure matchup and recent form indicates both teams will do their part in contributing to a high total.
The total has gone over in 4 of the Maple Leafs’ last 6 games, as well as in 8 of their last 11 on the road. Recent acquisitions Ryan O’Reilly and Noel Acciari have fitted in great so far, adding 2-way depth to an already deep team. If Toronto holds to their scoring averages, the over has a great look. For Seattle, the over has hit in 4 of their last 6 games at home. If the Maple Leafs are able to continue to produce, the Kraken will be forced to take some chances offensively to keep up. This game has a lot of potential for a high total, making the over look great at +100 odds.
