If you thought the first set of games of the 2nd round of the 2023 Stanley Cup playoffs was an outlier, think again. Last night we saw yet another skater score 4 goals himself and still lose the game. We have seen upsets throughout this postseason, including Game 1 of the Panthers vs. Maple Leafs series. However, we have also seen teams bounce back in a big way.

Toronto Maple Leafs ML (-192)
If you’ve been sticking with me throughout these playoffs, you will likely notice that we’re not straying away from the way I approached Game 1 of this series. The Maple Leafs entered this series as the clear favorite for a reason, and they can prove that in Game 2. They will still be on home ice, where they ended the season 27-8-6. That was the 3rd-best mark in the NHL, and they have been in this spot before. In fact, it was as recent as the first round. Toronto was torched by Tampa Bay in a 7-3 loss in Game 1.
However, the Leafs went on to win 7-2 in the following game and took the series in 6 games. We saw Florida goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky make a few saves that probably won’t also happen again in Game 2. It’s also worth remembering that the Leafs beat the Panthers in 3 of 4 meetings in the regular season, including both of the matchups in Toronto. Along with a few blunders from William Nylander in Game 1, there were several situations we don’t expect to be repeated in Game 2. Oddsmakers have made the Leafs even bigger favorites tonight, and I agree.
Under 6.5 (+110)
One aspect of Game 1 that did go as expected was staying under the total. After their series with the Lighting, it was a bit of a contrarian play, and it appears tonight will be the same. We have elite goal-scorers on the ice for sure, but another 4-2 game is what we’re expecting. Of course, in the Leafs favor this time around. Game 1 marked 3 straight games between these teams staying under the total.
In fact, the most recent matchup in the regular season was a 2-1 Toronto win. Something else we mentioned in Game 1 was the Leafs’ improved goaltending this season. That still holds true as advanced analytics gave Panthers just over 2.5 expected goals. We expect Toronto to be cleaner in terms of penalties and have better communication on the defensive end. That should lead to both a win and 6 or fewer goals.

Auston Matthews to score a goal (-115)
That’s right; I’m not letting one off night deter me from targeting the best goal-scorer on the ice. Truthfully, it wasn’t much of an off night; Matthews still looked strong and had some great shots on goal. While Florida’s Matthew Tkachuk has been taking over these playoffs, I still have faith in Matthews on home ice.
For as impressive as the Panthers have been thus far, they still have inconsistencies at goalie. That’s why we have seen both Bobrovsky and Alex Lyon in net within the first 2 rounds. Similarly, it’s also why we saw Matthews score 5 goals on the Panthers across their 4 games this season. Along with his 5 goals in the 1st round, I will happily back him at this price.
