After 3 games in each of tonight’s series, no team is in line for a sweep as all 4 series’ are sitting at 2-1. It looked like things were going to get out of hand for a few teams, but as the NHL playoffs typically do, gaps were closed, and we now have some very good series on our hands. The star power, youth, experience, physical play, and highlight reel goals have been on full display to kick off this postseason. With teams looking to either even a series or take a stranglehold of it, Monday will bring more great action.

New Jersey Devils vs New York Rangers over 6 (+100)

Now that they have a win on the board, New Jersey can come out with a little more confidence and not have to press as much. Having scored only 4 goals in the 3 games in this series, it feels like a matter of time before the Devils explode for a crooked number. This youthful Devils team scored the 5th most goals per game in the NHL this season, and they ranked T-3 in the league in goals scored 5 on 5. The top-end talent as well as depth on New Jersey’s roster is up there with any team in the league. The monkey is off their back and they can now just come out and do what they have done all season.

New Jersey will do their part in taking this game over the total as they are too talented and are due for an offensive outburst. The Rangers have also done their part in terms of contribution to the total with a couple of 5-goal performances already this series. A high total would reinforce the performances of these teams when they played head to head during the regular season. In 4 matchups, there was a 2-1 final, but the other 3 games had totals of 8, 7, and 7 respectively. One of these teams has scored at least 4 goals in 5 of the 7 head to head matchups in 2022-2023. These teams are very talented and the ice has opened up as they become more and more acquainted. A high total looks good in this one.

Toronto Maple Leafs vs Tampa Bay Lightning over 6.5 (-105)

After trading very lopsided wins in the first 2 games of this series, the Maple Leafs and Lightning finally had a close game as Toronto took Game 3 in overtime. All 3 games in this series have comfortably gone over with final scores hitting 10, 9, and 7 goals. The Lightning put up the rare touchdown and extra point in Game 1, then the Maple Leafs returned the favor by doing the same in Game 2. The offensive talent has been on full display in this series as these heavyweights have gone the goal-scoring route to be successful as opposed to goal prevention. Between the regular season and playoffs, the Lightning and Leafs have faced off now 6 times in 2022-2023. A team has scored at least 4 goals in all 6 games, and the average total in those 6 games is 7.5 goals. When Tampa and Toronto play each other, totals climb.

The over has been trendy for both teams separately as well as head to head. The over is 45-33-7 for the Lightning in their regular season and 3 playoff games thus far. It is also 25-14-3 at home. The total has also gone over in 7 of Tampa’s last 8 games overall including both regular season and playoff games. Tampa obviously has a scoring touch and pedigree, but their goal prevention has not been sharp in April. That strong goal scoring and sloppy goal prevention is a good recipe for high totals as has been the case in this series. There is no indication that these teams are done running up the scoreboard any time soon.

Colorado Avalanche -1.5 (+170) vs Seattle Kraken

This is not an indictment on the Kraken by any means. They have played very well against the reigning Stanley Cup champions in this series, but it just looks like the Avalanche have turned it on. After dropping Game 1 and then going down 2-0 in the 1st period of Game 2, Colorado decided they were done messing around and have promptly scored 11 goals in their last 5 periods of hockey. The Kraken are a very balanced offensive team as they ranked 4th in the league in goals scored per game this season and comfortably led the league in goals scored 5 on 5. With that in mind, the Avalanche had to produce to win as opposed to try to contain and win low scoring games. That is exactly what they have done after losing the first 4 periods of this series.

Colorado had a bizarrely high number of injuries this year and had somewhat of a piece mail roster all season long. Despite that, they still were just 2 points away from winning the Western Conference. They are still a bit banged up, but are as healthy as they have been in a while and appear to be hitting their stride. Having won the Stanley Cup last year in very dominant fashion throughout the playoffs, we know their pedigree, top end talent, and leadership. It would be an understatement to say each of those things are pretty good. The Avalanche appear to be done “messing around” and it would not be surprising to see them now run away with this series.
