I've been a capper since my love for sports met my proficiency with numbers and math. The NFL and NCAAF have always been my first loves, followed by the NHL. Although I prefer sports that involve hitting people, I still love capping MLB, soccer, tennis, and even some esports. Living in Florida has its perks like year-round sports of any kind. Monday has just 4 NHL games on the board, but we can still make it a big night. We had a great Sunday — headlined by a +1160 mega parlay winner — so let’s start the week off right. By piecing together our favorite plays into a parlay, we can get a mega payout that could cover our plays for the week to come. We’ve got a rematch from last year’s playoffs and a division rivalry tonight. We’ll be targeting both of those matchups, along with a battle in the Windy City of Chicago.

Before we dive in, be sure to check out our NHL picks for today’s action.

Carolina Hurricanes -1.5 (+125) over Chicago Blackhawks

We’re going to get things started with that aforementioned battle in the Windy City. However, it should be the Hurricanes that are the ones bringing the wind. They are looking to storm back after their loss on Saturday night. Losing to the defending Stanley Cup-champion Colorado Avalanche is nothing to be embarrassed about, but Carolina has hopes for another strong season. The ‘Canes ended last year with the 2nd-best record in the Eastern Conference, and are currently sitting 3rd in the Metro Division.

The Blackhawks have come out of the gates stronger than expected, but that isn’t saying much. They’re 6-5-3 through the first 5 weeks of the year, but have actually not been great at home. Their goals allowed per game actually increases when they play in Chicago, and scoring enough goals to make up for that is very unlikely. The Hurricanes pride themselves on being one of the best defensive teams in the NHL. With Alex DeBrincat no longer alongside Patrick Kane and Seth Jones on the injured reserve, the Blackhawks really do feel like a 1-man show. I’m expecting the dynamic duo of Andrei Svechnikov and Sebastian Aho to lead the way in a bounce-back win for the ‘Canes.

Los Angeles Kings vs Calgary Flames – Under 6 (-105)

We mentioned a divisional rivalry game, which is what we have with this matchup. These teams know each other well, as they battled atop the Pacific Division much of last season. They didn’t end up meeting in the playoffs, but their meetings during the year were hard-fought. Oftentimes rivalries have teams coming out tense, which generally leads to slow starts. That’s exactly what we saw in all 3 games between the Kings and Flames last season. Each of those contests finished with exactly 5 goals.

They were also all 3-2 scores, demonstrating how highly-contested these matchups are. LA and Calgary also both have their same goaltenders from last season. Kings Jonathan Quick has been working in tandem with Cal Petersen, and they’re beginning to look better than their rough start to the season. Similarly, Flames Jacob Markstrom has helped them stay under the total in each of their last 3 games. The Kings have also had two 2-1 games and a 1-0 game this month alone, and we are expecting another low-scoring matchup tonight.

St. Louis Blues vs Colorado Avalanche – Over 6.5 (+100)

After taking an under, we now get to root for goals. We don’t normally target multiple totals within our mega parlays, but there doesn’t seem to be as much value in puck lines and other plus-money markets. Regardless, we are still getting plus money with this play. These teams are all too familiar with each other, as well. All 3 meetings between these teams went over the total last season. Similarly, 3 of their first 4 games in the 2nd round of the Stanley Cup playoffs went over the total.

The Avs have seemed to find a groove since returning from the NHL Global Series in Finland, and just cruised by Carolina on Saturday night. That marked their 5th-straight game scoring at least 4 goals, and the Blues have not looked strong in that regard. They were able to end their 8-game losing streak last week, but they are still far from perfect. The win that ended that skid still went over the total after they allowed 3 goals to the lowly San Jose Sharks at home. Now they have to travel to Colorado to take on the defending Stanley Cup champs. The Avs have allowed at least 3 goals in 3 of their last 5 games, which should be all that is needed for them to take care of the rest of this total.

Kings vs Flames – Under 6.0 (-105)
