Coming into this series it looked like the Hurricanes were strictly a defensive team that would struggle to keep up with the other juggernauts in the Eastern Conference. They never had Max Pacioretty for an extended time and they lost Andrei Svechnikov late in the season. Carolina is now just a win away from advancing to the Eastern Conference Finals. But the Devils are a youthful, fast, very skilled team that will make a big push to extend their season.

Devils ML (-105)

This is far from an ideal spot for the Devils. New Jersey had an 8-4 win which was far from perfect in the first place. Otherwise, they have lost the other 3 games having been outscored by a combined 17-3. That just will not get it done. The Devils are a fast, skilled team with their backs against the wall. Their effort will undoubtedly be the best they will have brought yet.

The glass half full for the Devils is that in this postseason alone they have faced adversity. It has not reached the point where they were a game away from being eliminated. But after losing back-to-back 5-1 games to a deep, veteran-ridden Rangers team, they adjusted and took control of the rest of the series including huge road wins. Devils coach Lindy Ruff has been around the block and will have his guys ready to execute on what made them successful during the regular season to extend their season.

Over 5.5 (-120)

Each game in this series thus far has gone over a total of 5.5 goals. The Hurricanes have done most of the leg work which is somewhat surprising. Carolina was 15th in the NHL in goals scored per game, they were 20th in power play conversion, and 16th in goals scored 5 on 5. Whatever it is, they have found something during the playoffs that has led to increased production.

Both the Devils and Hurricanes had a strength of goal prevention all season long and through the first round of the playoffs. The indication then became that this may be a low-scoring series. It now looks like the Devils will need to keep up with the Hurricanes on the scoreboard to keep their season alive as opposed to containing them and winning low. New Jersey will be forced to take some chances offensively which has a high risk of being vulnerable defensively, but a high reward of scoring. Regardless, the net result is that style typically looks good for the over.

Timo Meier anytime goal scorer (+190)

We are going back to the well on looking to Timo Meier to score in what is now an elimination game for the Devils. After being held pointless until Sunday, the 9th game of New Jersey’s postseason, Meier now has a goal and an assist in the last 2 games. Carolina controlled Game 4 once again. But in the Devils’ only goal, Meier tallied an assist while logging 17:43 of ice time.

Maybe Meier just needed a little pick-me-up in the form of his Game 3 goal to get hot. Both he and the Devils hope it is not too little too late. Regardless, Meier has seen an uptick in ice time over his last 2 games and will continue to get plenty of looks as the team’s back is against the wall. Lindy Ruff is rewarding Meier’s recent play with more ice time and excellent line-mates. Meier is playing well and is in a good spot on a line with Jack Hughes to get back on the board.
