Who will win the NHL 4 Nations Face-Off?
The tournament champion odds are not very surprising. Canada and USA stand out as the deeper, more talented rosters. Sweden has stellar high-end talent but questions up the middle. Finland has sandwiched a weak defense core between an impressive forward group and a solid goaltender.
While Canada has questions in net, the talent up and down that roster, especially on special teams, is jarring. It is difficult to envision the Championship game on February 20 not including Canada. It is even more difficult to envision when you consider that Canada is one of the host countries and will get a huge bump from their home crowd, as well as a hostile US crowd.
USA looks phenomenal as well, but faces questions around winning pedigree. They have a young roster that collectively has not experienced much NHL playoff success, nor have they played together as much as the stalwarts on Team Canada.
Key questions to consider are:
- Which goaltender will earn the starting job for Canada, and can they outduel their excellent counterparts on USA, Sweden and Finland?
- Can the raw talent of the Americans overcome relative inexperience?
- Will the centers of Sweden be able to produce more than they have in the NHL this year?
- Can Finland’s defensemen rise to a level of play required to compete in this tournament?
It is not remotely out of the question that Sweden or Finland can surprise the hockey world and play for the Championship. But as puck-drop approaches, it looks like the USA and Canada will be on a crash course to meet on February 20. If that comes to fruition, that will be a must-watch game.
NHL 4 Nations Face-Off predictions
Top goalscorer: Sam Reinhart (+1000)
The Florida Panthers rank 5th in the NHL in goals scored per game. Sam Reinhart leads that team with 31 goals and 62 points in 57 games played. Last year, he tallied 57 goals, including a league-leading 27 powerplay goals. Reinhart is slated to be on a line with Connor McDavid and Mitch Marner, two assist extraordinaires. Be it even strength or on the top power play, Reinhart figures to be a major factor for Canada in this tournament. The +1000 odds for him to be the top goalscorer hold solid value.
USA top goalscorer: Auston Matthews (+300)
Auston Matthews is already arguably the best goalscorer in the NHL. In this tournament, he looks to be centering a line between Jake Guentzel and Jack Hughes. There will be an opportunity to produce every time these guys touch the ice. Look for Matthews to feast against Finland and Sweden, and be leaned on heavily to produce against Canada.
Finland top pointscorer: Mikko Rantanen (+400)
Among a fairly balanced forward group for Finland, Mikko Rantanen is the team’s production horse. In the last 2 seasons, he has collected 97 goals and 209 points in 162 games. Rantanen is now finding his footing on a new team and could use a strong performance in this tournament as a springboard. He will have great linemates and ample opportunity to produce.
NHL 4 Nations Face-Off Best Bets
Jack Hughes over 4.5 total points (+100)
The last time Jack Hughes did not produce at a point-per-game clip was the 2020-21 season. Since then, he has 131 goals and 325 points in 302 games. It will not be anything new for Hughes to tally 5+ points in at least 3 games, especially with superstar linemates. He has 7 in his last 5 alone.
Sweden under 4.5 round-robin points (-140)
There are bright spots for Sweden. They are weak at the center position, and it does not look like they have the firepower to finish as a top 2 team in this tournament. They would need to play perfect and, frankly, overachieve to get to the Championship. Perhaps this -140 will be a reprieve from the plus odds picks featured.
Canada to win NHL 4 Nations Face-Off (+160)
To piggyback off the aforementioned must-watch Championship game, the advantage appears to be with Canada. Their top end talent of Connor McDavid, Nathan MacKinnon, Cale Makar and Sidney Crosby just plain cannot be matched by the other teams. This Canadian team has talent, experience and a chip on their shoulder. They are too difficult to fade.
