NFL Teaser Picks Week 3: Best NFL teaser bets, odds and strategies this week

Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill (10) reacts after his touchdown against the New England Patriots in the second quarter at Gillette Stadium.

Some of the most popular types of NFL bets include the classic straight bet, a parlay, a player prop and a game total. However, have you heard of a teaser? It’s like a parlay in the sense that you’re combining 2 teams, but you get to change the spread or total in your favor. At most sportsbooks, a 2-team, 6-point teaser will have odds of -120; if it doesn’t, be sure to shop around for the best price.

NFL Teaser Strategies

There is a certain strategy when putting your teaser together. That includes being aware of the key numbers: 3, 6 and 7. Those are the most common winning margins in an NFL game. So, when taking a teaser, you ideally want to be lower than 3 and higher than 7. For example, if a heavy favorite is -8.5 on the spread, I can tease them down through all 3 key numbers to -2.5. That’s an excellent teaser choice since the team can now win by 3, 6 and 7 and the teaser would win.

On the other side, taking an underdog through those key numbers is also just as valuable. If a team is +1.5 underdogs, you could tease them up to +7.5, and then that allows them to win or lose by the 3 key numbers and you would still win. There’s also the option to tease game totals in the NFL, but with how quickly and sporadic scores can happen, I tend to stay from totals and stick to spreads. It can be very fun hunting for the best teaser options each week, so let’s get into some of my teaser contenders for Week 3, and then my favorite teaser option for the Sunday.

NFL Week 3 Teaser Options

Last week, I teased the 49ers to -1.5 and the Commanders to +9.5 for my first teaser win of the season. There was only minor sweating in the first half in Denver when the Commanders were down 21-3, but it was a classic Broncos performance in the second half as they blew the lead and the Commanders covered the 9.5-point spread easily… by winning the game. For Week 3, I’m teasing 2 massive spreads down to a much more appealing number and taking 3 underdog spreads and boosting them to above a touchdown.

  1. Dolphins -0.5 (from -6.5)
  2. Cowboys -6.5 (from -12.5)
  3. Rams +9 (from +3)
  4. Saints +7.5 (from +1.5)
  5. Chargers +7.5 (from +1.5)

The Dolphins and Cowboys are a combined 4-0, and the two teams they play are a combined 0-4. Of course, that’s not the only reason I’ve chosen them. Miami’s offense has been elite through their first two games, and their Week 2 win over the Patriots was impressive. As for the Cowboys, they’ve outscored their opponents 70-10 so far, and we won’t be able to see them against tough competition yet with the Cardinals as their next opponent.

Moving to the next 3, they are certainly still quality teaser candidates. The Rams are 1-1 heading into Week 3, but their Week 2 performance against the 49ers was eye opening. Matthew Stafford and the Rams went toe-to-toe with Brock Purdy’s offense for nearly the entire game until one untimely interception gave the Niners the win. And keep an eye on Puka Nacua, who might just be the next big thing in the NFL — and he should rip through Cincinnati’s secondary.

The Saints are 2-0 following two close wins against the Titans and Panthers and are just one week away from getting Alvin Kamara back. But so far, Derek Carr hasn’t needed Kamara as a safety blanket; he has been great through two weeks. And finally, the Chargers are one of the few winless teams remaining, but they have an excellent chance of earning their first win in what is likely to be a shootout in Minnesota. I’m expecting touchdowns after touchdowns in that game, so getting Justin Herbert and the Bolts above a touchdown is fantastic value.

NFL Week 3 Teaser Best Bet

For my Week 3 teaser, I’m backing the 2 hottest teams in the NFL.

Dolphins -0.5
Cowboys -6.5

All we’ve heard since Miami’s win over the Patriots on Sunday Night Football is how good their offense is, and it’s true, their offense is elite. Tua Tagovailoa has been nearly perfect through two weeks and is a well-deserved MVP candidate heading into Week 3. But he’s not the only one exceeding expectations on Miami’s offense. Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle have been a dangerous duo downfield, with one of the two seemingly always open, while Raheem Mostert has 3 touchdowns so far and is coming off a 121-yard rushing performance against a solid Patriots defense. And to top it all off, their defense is allowing the 7th-fewest yards per attempt, so Miami is balanced and dangerous.

When you have outscored your opponents 70-10 through just 2 weeks, it makes sense to be favored by nearly 2 touchdowns. And while I wouldn’t rush to the counter to bet the Cowboys -12.5 spread, I would happily take their -6.5 spread — which means they just need to win by a touchdown. Considering they have won by 20 and 40 against teams much more talented than the Cardinals, they are the perfect second leg to my teaser. Dallas’ defense should create havoc on Josh Dobbs in the backfield, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see him throw a few interceptions — an aspect the Cowboys defense ranks 1st in following 2 weeks of action.
