NFL Comeback Player of the Year best bet: Nick Chubb (+1300)
Odds available at FanDuel Sportsbook at time of publishing.
At first glance, I wanted to back Kirk Cousins with a wager in this market. After all, Cousins has been much quieter throughout his rehab process from a torn Achilles compared to Aaron Rodgers, and an NFC South division championship with the Atlanta Falcons could go a long way to sculpting a positive narrative that the NFL media and voters could get behind. However, we just don’t know too much about how Cousins is going to look at his advanced age coming off this injury, so much like Rodgers, I can’t get behind a wager on the unknown. Instead, I’m going to look toward the Cleveland Browns and target their franchise running back to have an inspiring bounce-back season en route to claiming this award.
Nick Chubb has had to overcome a lot in his career, particularly when it comes to injuries. The former Georgia product tore his PCL, MCL and LCL in his left knee in college and managed to overcome that on his way to becoming one of the best running backs in the NFL. In his 6th season with the Browns, Chubb was sadly forced to miss most of the campaign with a major knee injury suffered in Week 2 last fall. Chubb has now had multiple surgeries to repair his MCL and ACL in his career, which makes a potential return to high-level football feel extremely improbable. However, reports from training camp have been very encouraging for the veteran running back, leading me to believe that he might take the field in a meaningful game before the end of September.
It’ll be an inspiring story if Chubb is able to perform at even a competent level after another serious injury, which presents us with a compelling case for taking this number at +1300 before it could potentially be cut in half by the midway point of the season. Let’s take a shot on Chubb to have a successful comeback season and hope that the voters are also taken with his story.
