New York Giants vs Jacksonville Jaguars predictions, odds, spreads & betting lines: Jaguars defense can fluster Daniel Jones

New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones (8) throws the ball during the second half against the Denver Broncos at MetLife Stadium. parlay

The New York Giants have been one of the surprises of the NFL season, with a 5-1 record through 6 weeks. Now the Giants pay a visit to the 2-4 Jacksonville Jaguars as they try to stay within striking distance of the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC East. This is just the 10th time in NFL history that a team with a winning percentage of .800 or better is an underdog against a team with a winning percentage of .400 or worse this far into a season.

Here are our predictions and best bets for this Giants-Jaguars showdown.

New York Giants vs Jacksonville Jaguars expert picks

We have 2 NFL picks for this week’s clash between New York and Jacksonville. Let’s take a look.

Against the spread pick: Jaguars -3 (-110) over Giants

On the previous 9 occasions that an .800 or better team has been an underdog against a .400 or worse team in Week 7 or later, the favorite with the worse record is 9-0 straight up and 8-0-1 against the spread. You would be wise to back that trend, mainly because the Giants are nowhere near as good as their record suggests. Daniel Jones is bottom 5 in the NFL passing yards and has the fewest completions of 20-plus yards among all starting quarterbacks. Left tackle Andrew Thomas is nursing an elbow injury, so that is something to watch. The Jaguars’ defensive line has elite talent, so they may not even need to bring extra pressure in order to pester Jones. Jacksonville actually has a good chance of dominating the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball. If Trevor Lawrence avoids the big mistake, he will likely outplay Jones and lead his team to a win and cover.

Over/Under totals pick: Under 42.5 (-110)

The Giants don’t have to apologize for being 5-1, but their offense is nothing special under head coach Brian Daboll and offensive coordinator Mike Kafka. Efficiency numbers are decent, but intended air yards are way down and Jones lacks any explosive weapons on the outside. Although Saquon Barkley is healthy and enjoying a resurgence, besides the random bolt of lightning out of the backfield this is very much a paint-by-numbers New York offense that needs time in order to dink and dunk its way down the field. Points aren’t going to be scored quickly in this one – if they are even scored at all! Lawrence’s numbers have dropped off considerably since his hot start. In Weeks 1-3 the former Clemson star had the 5th-highest EPA+CPOE, but he was just 29th in that category in Weeks 4-6. Both of these teams boast electric pass rushes, too. All in all it looks like points will come at a premium on Sunday, so we are siding with the under.
