Notable moves in the 2024-25 MLB offseason
The team re-signed several key contributors from their 2024 club while also bringing in Blake Snell, Roki Sasaki, Hyeseong Kim, Tanner Scott, Michael Conforto and Kirby Yates during free agency. The Dodgers’ expectations are a championship ring or bust entering 2025.
Yankee fans were sad to see Juan Soto sign a 15-year contract with the crosstown rival Mets, but the defending American League champions did a pretty good job retooling their roster in my opinion. The team traded for closer Devin Williams from the Brewers and Cody Bellinger from the Cubs while also signing Max Fried and Paul Goldschmidt in free agency. However, they were hit with a blow as their ace Gerrit Colt was ruled out for the season.
There were several other high-impact offseason moves that happened this winter that may catch your eye on opening day. The Diamondbacks won the Corbin Burnes sweepstakes and also replaced Christian Walker with a younger Josh Naylor at first base. Houston had an eventful offseason, bringing in Walker from Arizona and Isaac Paredes from the Cubs to play their corner infield spots. The team did lose Alex Bregman to the Red Sox in free agency, and traded both Kyle Tucker and Ryan Pressly to the Cubs, however.
Not only did Boston bring in Bregman, but they bolstered their starting rotation with Garret Crochet from the White Sox and Walker Buehler from the Dodgers’ championship roster. Other notable moves include Anthony Santander to Toronto, Willy Adames to San Francisco, and the Tigers signing both Jack Flaherty and Gleyber Torres.
2025 MLB World Series best bet: LA Dodgers (+300)
Odds available at DraftKings Sportsbook at time of publishing. Playable to +275.
It should be no surprise that the Dodgers are heavily favored to win the 2025 World Series, with their best price in the market being +300 at the time of publishing. The top 3 of the lineup is the best in baseball with Shohei Ohtani, Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman each projected for a wRC+ of 140 or higher this season by FanGraphs.
Resigning Teoscar Hernandez was a massive boost for the middle of their lineup, and Max Muncy will look to bounce back after injuries held him to only 73 games played last season. Injuries are bound to happen with every pitching staff, but no team is better suited to deal with those eventual losses than the Los Angeles Dodgers. The team has numerous depth pieces in both the starting rotation and bullpen, and that depth should help alleviate the regular season workload of their top arms. Placing a +300 future may not be as fun as my next suggestion, but the Dodgers are well worth that price heading into the 2025 season.
Not only does the National League have the Dodgers to show off, but 4 of the 5 teams with the shortest odds for the title are in the NL when you include the Braves, Phillies and Mets. Given this, a bettor’s best shot to hit big on a surprise team is likely to come in the American League this season. The Yankees have the best odds in the AL, between +800 and +900 in the market. While I would have agreed with that pricing about a week or two ago, injuries to both Luis Gil and Gerrit Cole have dimmed my excitement for the team. New York still figures to contend in the AL, but I find more value in the teams priced below them.
The Orioles are priced between +1300 and +1600 but their starting rotation concerns me, however, as it is already thin and now dealing with Grayson Rodriguez’s injury concerns. I am not buying Houston at their current price of between +1500 and +2000 as their new-look roster could result in a small step back this season. Boston improved their roster drastically this offseason, and there is an argument that their young talent could push them over the edge as a contender. There is an enticing +2500 price tag that you can grab on Boston at the time of publishing but it is an outlier price compared to the rest of the market. The Texas Rangers have several +2500 prices in the market and that is where I will officially take a small stab on an American League sleeper.
2025 MLB World Series best longshot pick: Texas Rangers (+2500)
Odds available at DraftKings Sportsbook at time of publishing. Playable to +2000
The Rangers were just 68-94 in 2022 before spending money in free agency and winning the 2023 World Series. Texas was just 78-84 in 2024, dealing with a plethora of injuries to both their pitching staff and position player group, but I am buying their bounceback as a contender in 2025. The Rangers got just 91 combined games from Josh Jung and Evan Carter last season while Corey Seager also missed 39 games. Improved health from those key pieces combined with the continued development of Wyatt Langford is crucial for the team’s success this season.
Marcus Semien and Adolis Garcia should see their numbers return to prior form with better support around them, and the additions of Joc Pederson, Jake Burger and Kyle Higashioka could make this one of the better lineups in baseball. Health is a concern for their starting rotation, but Jacob deGrom, Nathan Eovaldi, Jon Gray, Tyler Mahle, Cody Bradford, Kumar Rocker, Dane Dunning and Jack Leiter should be enough depth.
The bullpen is composed of almost entirely new pieces, with Chris Martin, Robert Garcia, Jacob Webb, Shawn Armstrong, Hoby Milner and Luke Jackson all being added by free agency or trade this offseason. That group will likely be added to by the trade deadline and should be improved from what was their major weakness in 2024. At +2500, Texas is given a 3.85% chance to win the World Series, while FanGraphs, ATC, and THE BATX projections would price them at +2000, +1850, and +1200 respectively.
