New York Mets -1.5 over Boston Red Sox (+146)

The Mets have won 5 in a row to pull within a half-game of the Braves for the third and final wild-card spot in the National League. Even though their 3-game sweep over the weekend came at the expense of one of the worst teams in baseball history (the White Sox), there is no denying that the Mets are playing good baseball. They have to like their chances of making it 6 straight, because David Peterson is on the mound. Peterson 8-1 this season with a 2.83 ERA after going 3-0 with a 1.86 ERA in August. He should be in line for more success against a Boston lineup that in the last 14 contests is batting .208 and averaging just 3.1 runs. The Red Sox are countering with Kutter Crawford, who is 8-12 with a 4.12 ERA. Give me the home team to win convincing fashion.

Pittsburgh Pirates -1.5 over Chicago Cubs (+142)

This is the wildest spread I have seen in a long time. On the money line Pittsburgh (-120) is just barely favored over Chicago (+100) even though the pitching matchup is Paul Skenes against Kyle Hendricks. It is true that Skenes cooled off a bit August, but his ERA for the month was still a respectable 3.18. Through 3 starts against the Cubs, he is 1-0 with a 3.00 ERA and 24 strikeouts compared to only 4 walks. Hendricks has been horrendous in 2024, sporting a 3-10 record and a 6.75 ERA. The veteran right-hander just faced Pittsburgh last week and lasted only 1.2 innings while surrendering 6 earned runs on 8 hits and 3 walks. In his head-to-head start before that, Hendricks served up 8 runs (7 earned) on 11 hits in 4.2 innings during a 9-3 loss. In what world can we expect anything other than a big win for the Pirates this evening?

New York Yankees -1.5 over Texas Rangers (+114)

The Yankees took the series opener on Monday, thus remaining a half-game ahead of Baltimore in the American League East. Although Aaron Judge and Juan Soto have fallen off their previous red-hot pace in recent days, Jazz Chisholm is batting .476 over the last 6 games. During the same stretch, Anthony Volpe is at .333 and Giancarlo Stanton is batting .300. There are simply a ton of weapons in this New York lineup, so it hardly matters if a couple of guys are in funks at the same time. As for the pitching, Carlos Rodon comes in with a 14-9 record and decent 4.31 ERA. Rodon faced the Rangers last month and got the win after firing 5.2 innings of shutout baseball. I believe the Yankees will win and they have a great chance to do so by multiple runs.
