Arizona Diamondbacks ML over Washington Nationals (+120)

This has been an odd series so far. In the series opener, the Nationals had the better starting pitcher on the mound (Jake Irvin) but ended up losing as the offense couldn’t get to Slade Cecconi. And then last night, the Nationals were starting Patrick Corbin which meant they were huge underdogs. But somehow, the Diamondbacks weren’t able to hit Corbin while the Nats got to Brandon Pfaadt. So for tonight’s game, I’m taking a shot with the team starting with the lesser starting pitcher in hope that the trend continues. The Snakes are starting Ryne Nelson, who owns an ERA and xERA north of 5. He will be countered by lefty MacKenzie Gore who has blossomed into a solid starter in 2024. Also, the Nats could be without CJ Abrams tonight. I’m taking the better overall team at plus-money odds.

Kansas City Royals -1.5 over Oakland Athletics (+105)

This series has not gone to plan for the Royals. Kansas City has lost both games in Oakland even though they’ve started Alec Marsh and Cole Ragans against the struggling A’s. The Oakland bats came alive against those 2 pitchers, but I’m expecting a change tonight when Seth Lugo takes the hill. Lugo has been one of the best pitchers in all of baseball this year with a 2.40 ERA and a 1.05 WHIP. His elite 8-pitch mix keeps hitters on their toes and gets plenty of weak contact since he only throws his fastball about 20% of the time. Countering Lugo is the young Mitch Spence of the A’s, who has been moved from the bullpen to the starting rotation. In his last 3 starts, Spence has surrendered 10 runs and 23 hits in just 18.2 innings. I’m backing KC to get back on track today.

New York Yankees -1.5 over Baltimore Orioles (+136)

The rubber match of this 3-game series will feature Cole Irvin against Luis Gil. Irvin has been back and forth between the starting rotation and bullpen this season but has found a home as a starter lately since the O’s are without Kyle Bradish, Tyler Wells and John Means. But since returning to the rotation, Irvin has allowed 9 runs, 29 hits and 2 home runs in 17.2 innings. In that time, hitters have a .305 batting average, .286 xBA and a 45% hard-hit rate against him. The lefty has struggled to miss bats, and his fastball and curveball combination hasn’t been too effective. On the hill for the Yankees is Gil, a leading candidate for the AL Rookie of the Year award. The young right-hander has been fabulous in the rotation this season as he owns a 2.02 ERA with a 2.74 xERA in 14 starts. Plus, he’s limited hitters to just a .177 xBA in those outings, which ranks in the 98th percentile among pitchers. Take the Yankees to win the series this afternoon.
