Houston Astros -1.5 over New York Yankees (+150)

The Yankees and Astros have trended in very different directions lately. Houston has won 4 out of their last 5 games as part of a 12-6 record since the all-star break. They are also riding a high from the no-hitter thrown by Framber Valdez on the same day they re-acquired Justin Verlander. The Astros have had the Yankees’ number specifically as they have won the last 7 consecutive head-to-head matchups against New York dating back to June of last year.

The feeling is not as euphoric in the Bronx. The Yankees have dropped 4 out of their last 6 games and are in last place in the AL East. While they are mathematically alive at just 3.5 games back of a wild-card spot, they stood pat at the trade deadline which, if social media is any indication, did not go over well with the fanbase. They just cannot seem to break through and have another uphill battle against Houston.

Minnesota Twins vs St. Louis Cardinals Over 9 (-108)

The over has hit in 14 out of Minnesota’s last 19 games entering Thursday. The Twins have either scored or allowed 5+ runs in 6 out of their last 9 games. For a 4-game stretch last week, they both scored and allowed 5+ runs in each game. That kind of volatility typically bodes well for high totals, as has been the case for the Twins.

The Cardinals’ pitching has been their achilles heel all season. Neither the rotation nor bullpen has been good. As bad as their pitching has been, it got even worse this week as they sold off assets at the trade deadline. The Twins have a great opportunity to produce against this Cardinals’ staff while the Cardinals’ lineup still has enough thump to do their part in taking the game over the total as well.

Cincinnati Reds ML over Chicago Cubs (+136)

The Reds were enjoying a nice stretch of 9 wins in 12 games before the calendar turned to August. In the last 2 games, the Cubs have bullied the Reds in a couple of wins to the tune of outsourcing Cincinnati 36-15. Fortunately for the Reds, they had enough of a gap to where even after those ugly losses, they still hold the lead in the NL Central by a half game over the Brewers and 3 games over the Cubs.

Prior to Tuesday and Wednesday’s ugly games, the Reds beat the Cubs 6-5 on Monday and had also won 5 of the prior 7 head-to-head games with Chicago. Cincinnati overall has played well against Chicago over the past year and will look for a correction on Thursday. The Reds are a good team that will face a pitcher who has struggled. This is a good bounce-back spot.
