Now that the calendar has officially turned to September, the MLB division and wild-card races are now a sprint to the finish line. Every day looks more optimistic for some teams and more bleak for others. This weekend has already seen meaningful movement in the standings and Sunday sets up to bring more of the same.
With today’s slate acting as a second Saturday due to the Labor Day holiday on Monday, this is a great day for baseball fans to soak in a great slate of September games.

Toronto Blue Jays -1.5 & game total over 11.5 (+170) at Colorado Rockies
This is a series that the Blue Jays really need to win. Toronto has soft matchups for another week which they can use as a springboard to run away with a playoff spot as the final month of the regular season progresses. If the Blue Jays are going to lock in a playoff spot, they have to beat up on teams like the Rockies, who are 2-10 in their last 12 games and 1-5 in their last 6 at home. They are the worst team in the NL.
There have already been 37 runs scored in the first 2 games of this series. Totals are typically higher at Coors Field and these teams have blown by the game totals with authority. The over has hit in 6 out of the Blue Jays’ last 7 games as well as in 11 of the Rockies’ last 16. This matchup and the recent trends favor another high total.

Houston Astros -1.5 & game total over 8.5 (+350) vs New York Yankees
Somewhat surprisingly, the Astros find themselves in a battle for a playoff spot in September. Urgency has kicked up in Houston lately as they are certainly no formality to win the AL West. They also have AL wild-card teams knocking on the door just behind them. The Astros are 5-2 in their last 7 games and 6-2 in their last 8 when hosting the Yankees. New York took the first two games of this series, so expect Houston to play with added urgency to get back in the win column against a weaker Yankees team.
The over has been rolling in Astros games lately. The total has now gone over in 11 of their last 14 and in 7 out of their last 8 at home. Houston has both scored and allowed runs in bunches over the last 2 weeks. That kind of volatility typically leads to high totals, as has been the case in Astros games. Until they find some kind of stability, the over should continue to be a good play.
